These are great boat buying/retrieving stories. I flew from Mpls to Vegas to inspect my M23 on Lake Mead. Fell in love at first sight and bought her. Flew back with a friend (old truck driver) 2 months later, rented a U-haul truck, loaded her on her trailer after checking all the wheel bearings, and 3 days later we were back in Mn for her new home. My M17 was much closer, only 250 miles away. (On Superior). Sailboats Inc was a dealer on Montgomery boats back in the 70's, so we do have a number of 15s and 17s around here. Bones- About 1980 I was invited to do the Leach lake regatta by a Minneapolis family that owned a new 23. We won 1st overall, and I'm temped to take my Sage to the race this or next summer; had a great time except for the mosquitos. There were several M-17's in the race and on launching day one of them drove under a tree with the mast up with predictable results. He wasn't aware that usually, bent masts are easy to straighten, and was delighted when we straightened it out over a picnic table. We adjusted the mast rake at the same time (an unknown concept to the M sailors) and he mopped up in the first day's sailing. After the first day's racing I was immediately corralled to help the rest of the 17 sailors rake their masts, and they were first and second in their class and took most of the positions in the first ten of their class. Bones, I ran out of energy rigging up and rigging down....had to get the C-Dory 22. Practicality won out over romance.
