Saililing Yellowstone Lake and Jackson Lake Wyoming
Who has experience sailing these lakes We are looking to drag our M15 from Phoenix to cooler climes . Got the boating regs online for Yellowstone Lake looks like one permit after another. Any help would be appreciated. Bill and Dawn "Desert Dawn"
I just came back from both parks. Yellowstone Lake has a bridge over the harbor entrance and the mast has to be lowered to go sailing and raised out on the lake. It also cannot be left down inside the harbor. My advice is to go to Lake Jackson in the Tetons. More sailboats there anyway. Probably due to the mast conditions at Yellowstone. PS: I didn't sail there; I just observed the sailing conditions. Water temp 10 days ago was 49 degrees. Bill, It has been years, but the family and I twice did a week of sailing on Jackson lake. The lake is beautiful and quite a bit warmer than Yellowstone Lake; warm enough for swimming. We entered Teton Park from the South entrance, and at the ranger station purchased a season sailing permit. At that time (16 years ago) there were 3 marinas on the lake and we launched at the southern most; which had a very nice ramp and lots of vehicle+trailer parking. For the duration of our trip we took moorings each night at the two southern most marinas. As I recall, the northern most marina did not have guest moorage, but had excellent ice cream! Both trips were a great vacation. I believe you can call and make mooring resv. There are not a lot of places on the lake to anchor for the night. Mostly because the shallower areas were heavily infested with mosquitoes and leaches. The marina in the middle border a Park campground it was great fun to go to the evening Ranger presentations. This same marina offered water taxi service; you honk your horn and out they would come with a dingy to give you a ride to shore (the kids thought that was the coolest). Jackson Lake is a very deep lake and it is thought that the water temp is warmer than Yellow Stone lake due to underwater geo-thermal activity. Overall the water is crystal clear and you would be hard-pressed to find a more beautiful setting. As I said, it has been a while, but I believe of the two lakes I would favor Jackson Lake due to its accessibility and conveniences. Thanks to all who have replied. This new to us and the information has been very helpful.Icalled Yellowstone back country office today and they were very helpful there are designated mooring areas and docks placed around the lake mostly on the western shore as I was told the wind prevails from the Southwest. Reservations are required mail in then email confirmed. Anyone else with knowledge of the area please feel free to chime in. Thanks, Bill On Tue, Jul 28, 2009 at 12:16 PM, R.K.Graves <rkgraves@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi, We live in Lander, WY and have been sailing Jackson Lake and Yellowstone Lake every summer for the past seven years. Lander is about a 4 hour drive from Yellowstone Lake. My wife and I have spent, over the past years, several weeks at a time on Yellowstone to just weekends. We currently sail with our Montgomery 17, which we purchased new last year from Bob, before that we had a Nimble 20. And before I forget, we also have a Nor'sea 27 on Lake Huron in Cedarville, MI. Anyway, at Yellowstone we put in at Grant Village, this was a marina there years ago but not now. It has a great ramp and dock. This is the only place you can put in with a sailboat, Bridge Bay up the road is a nice marina but not sailboat usable unless you want to lower and raise your mast to go under the bridge. We have spent time at all the back country locations on the lake that is designated for boats. All are great places. The Park boat permit is $20.00 and a Back Country permit is $20.00 good for up to 14 days. If you spend some time there just watch the weather. However, I have experienced more bad weather on Lake Huron than Yellowstone. I guess bad weather is just part of the joy of sailing. No bears! But plenty of moose, dear, bald eagles, there are several pelican rookeries. The only wild animals we don't see much of are humans. I step the mast with a two way connected to the trailer and the jib halyard. Easy and controllable for us older people. -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_boats-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:montgomery_boats-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Bill Kaiser Sent: Wednesday, July 29, 2009 6:46 PM To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats Subject: Re: M_Boats: Saililing Yellowstone Lake and Jackson Lake Wyoming Thanks for responding what wild life have seen while boating bears?
