Montgomery Bottom Work in the Pacific Northwest
Hello, I would appreciate it if anyone could share information on where they have had work done to repair or maintain their Montgomery 17 or 23 keel and centerboard (cast iron version) in the Pacific Northwest. I would also be curious to learn of experiences related to barrier coat applications and bottom paint. Any info on the quality or work, knowledge, and professionalism would be appreciated. Thank you! Hi Dave, I am thinking about keeping it in a slip for 6-7 months each year. Stored on the trailer for the winter. Gerry

Gerry: has the boat ever been in-water moored for and extended time? my M17, 1983 model, spent over 20 years stored in-water in Quartermaster Harbor, Vashon Island, for 6-9 months at a stretch (ie, the season). she doesn't have blisters. she has anti-fouling bottom paint. the cast iron board was refurbished by the prior owner about 2006/7. if the boat has a history of being 'wet' stored and doesn't have blisters it is very unlikely she will get blisters you MUST bottom paint the boat. remember ... you get busy the weekend you plan to clean the unpainted bottom and delay a week ... then another ... and then another. you then have a SERIOUS problem and a damaged bottom. i know some folks in Port Townsend at Boat Haven Marina that can do the work. if PT isn't to far let me know and i'll share contact information. :: Dave Scobie :: former M15 owner #288 - http://www.freewebs.com/m15-name-scred :: M17 #375 SWEET PEA - http://www.m17-375.webs.com :: Sage 17 #1 - AIR BORN - http://sagemarine.us/sage_17.html :: Sage 15 sloop #001 - ASOLARE - http://sagemarine.us/sage_15.html :: SageCat #000 - SAGECAT - http://sagemarine.us/sagecat.html On Wed, Mar 29, 2017 at 4:00 PM, Gerald Wyatt <wyattgs@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Dave, Thanks. Did Jerry use steel or lead on the M23s? The old brochure on the MSOG Photo Site indicates lead, but I have heard stories of steel ballast in them. I think Dauntless had her ballast changed out. Just curious if you knew with all your time working with the boats. Gerry

My 1979 M23 has steel ballast. At least that is what the magnet held against the keel indicates. I removed old bottom paint then barrier coated and applied new paint prior to committing her to long (6-12 months) salt water immersions. It was not a pleasant job but I couldn't afford to hire it out. I also did bottom paint on my M17 when I had her. And removed bottom paint from my M15 when I got her (she lives on her trailer and only day sails). Mark Dvorscak M23 Faith M15 ~~~ On Mar 29, 2017 16:11, "Gerald Wyatt" <wyattgs@gmail.com> wrote:

Gerry, It sounds like you are planning use your boat in the same fashion as I currently do, Serenity is in a slip 6-7 months and stored on the trailer during the winter. I bought my 1982 M17 in Arizona where it had been sailed mostly in fresh water and the hull was in pristine shape. Despite the good condition when I got it I chose to barrier coat the bottom before putting on anti-fouling, the latter being pretty much essential if you are going to have the boat in the salt chuck for 6-7 months... I know there are two schools of thought on the need for barrier coat. My view/preference for barrier coat is shaped from the experience of maintaining 5 older boats (circa 1970's) for our Sea Scout group. When I first joined the group we had a couple boats that had been barrier coated and the other 3 weren't, 10 years later 2 of the 3 that were not barrier coated had wound up with blisters. Perhaps we were just unlucky but it left me with the old adage that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure... Keith *Keith R. Martin, P.Eng.* *Burnaby, B.C. Hello,
I would appreciate it if anyone could share information on where they have had work done to repair or maintain their Montgomery 17 or 23 keel and centerboard (cast iron version) in the Pacific Northwest. I would also be curious to learn of experiences related to barrier coat applications and bottom paint.
Any info on the quality or work, knowledge, and professionalism would be appreciated.
Thank you!

Gerry, I have found when I have my M-15 in a saltwater boatslip in South Puget Sound if I pull it out about once a month then give the boat and the trailer a good freshwater scrub it keeps the fuzzy things and barnacles from getting stuck.
