Re: M_Boats: Shroud tension
Thanks, Joe. With your and Bones's data I've got a good idea where the numbers should be. Rick M-17 #633 Lynne L Joe Murphy <seagray@embarqmail.com> wrote:
Rick, Sorry for not replying sooner. I had to go down to the boat to get the numbers. Lower Shroud 10% of breaking strength (210 lbs) 25 on Loos gauge Upper Shroud 15% of breaking strength ( 315 lbs) 32 on Loos gauge Hope this helps. Joe,
What tension did you put on the upper and lower shrouds?
Thanks,

I too had problems "figuring out what's snug and what's tight" so I went with the advice to use the Loos. They're expensive ($75) but now I realize that what I thought was tight was terribly loose. Joe SeaFrog

Dave,
I noticed the email in which you mentioned a youTube video on shroud adjustment, but couldn't find it on youTube. If you did upload it, could you pass on the link? Since the only advice I've heard on M-17 shroud tensioning is "snug, but not tight", I'd like to find some way of figuring out what's snug and what's tight.
Thanks,

SWEET PEA's, my M17, lee shrouds (upper and lower) are loose when going to weather ... when blowing a lot less than 25.
i have shrouds just loose enough that i can get the mast up and down without adjustment (i just adjust the backstay).
the lowers should be a bit looser than the uppers.
i have a video that Eldor (aka, 1/2 of the good ship MOTU ITI) helped me make last summer. about 35 seconds showing how 'snug' (Jerry's term) the shrouds are on SWEET PEA. i'll upload the vid to youTube this evening and share the link.

Hi gang, I am usually too busy under such conditions, but I noticed that the lower lee shrouds on my M17 show a little slack when I beat to weather at wind speeds over 25 knots. I am reluctant to start a tightening regime because the shrouds are just loose enough for me to raise and lower the mast without loosening and tightening the turnbuckles each cycle. Should I be concerned with the situation? Can one expect some permanent stretching of the shrouds with use? Will the presumed slight bowing of the mast to leeward be a problem?
Thanks in advance for your comments.

Some time ago I told you all that I was going to sell SeaFrog in order to scratch that itch I've had for years to live aboard. Well, reluctantly I finally put her on the market. You can see it at http://sailingtexas.com/201301/smontgomery17124.html I have no plans as yet of leaving this group. You all have been a great inspiration to do some of the things that I did on SeaFrog. Take care all. Joe M17 SeaFrog
Good luck to you Joe. Have you decided on a liveaboard boat? I'd be interested to hear what you have in mind. My wife would like some lead time for when I move aboard...to fraternize with her lawyer I suspect... Tom On Thu, Mar 21, 2013 at 4:00 PM, Joe Murphy <seagray@embarqmail.com> wrote:

Tom, No I haven't picked one out yet. I'm also trying to sell my place here in NC. I'm looking for a bluewater cruiser that has an aft and foreward cabin that I can single hand. If any of you have any suggestions please zing 'em to me. Joe: Nor'Sea 27. great boat and another classic 'Hess wrinkleboat'. do some youtube searches as there are many examples of the boat being single-handed. always a few for sale ... just need to find one that meets your condition v. price requirements. :: Dave Scobie --- On Thu, 3/21/13, Joe Murphy <seagray@embarqmail.com> wrote:

The first boat I owned was a NorSea 27. Great boat. In hind sight I kinda wish I still had it. I kept her for 5 years and never had a single systems failure of any kind.... refrigerator, pumps, gauges, etc. It had a nice deep sump that any water in the bilge drained to. I had cobwebs under the sole. It even had a triple axle trailer. Joe....the M_17 looks great. She should sell quickly. I know you're going to miss her. So now you've had two Lyle Hess boats; one of my Nor'Sea 27s that you had for years and you moved down to one of my M_17s. Now BACK UP to a larger live-aboard.......hmmm..good luck to you and keep us informed on what you eventually decide. Bob, I wish I had a crystal ball. If I knew it was just me and me alone living on a boat I'd get another LH boat, probably the Falmouth Cutter. I still think they are one of the most beautiful boats out there. But I think while I still enjoy fairly good health I'm going to stretch and see if I can't handle something in the 38-40. I've been looking at Baba's, Tayana's, Endeavor's, and Hans Christians. They all have some sort of aft cabin and other than the Endeavor all seem to be robust blue water ladies. They all sail like slugs, but I never could figure out that there racin' stuff. Now, if you can put a separate vee berth in an aft cabin NS, that'd be the ticket!! Joe, I too am preparing to scratch that liveaboard itch, although my search/choices will have to be more modest. However, we seem to have the same taste in boats. I really would like to follow your progress, so feel free to contact me off list. Good Luck! Bill
