Re: M_Boats: Do I need new sails
Interesting. My 1981 is a stock boat with 3 owners including me. Judy got the sail plans from you, but the jib was 6 inches too long! Daniel Sent from my iPhone

All the 15's that I made had the same rig. i can't speak for more recent production. I've heard that masts are longer now, but I haven't measured one.

Yup. You need new sails. And sails for the M15 are quite reasonably priced. I got mine from JudyB at Hyde. She did a fantastic job. Measurements are key, as all these older M boats can have some slight differences. New sails change the boat so much you won’t believe it.
Which reminds me, Judy, I owe you some money and some sails!

Hi I know this question has been asked before But can't recall the advise that was given. So here it is: I have a 1985 M15 for about 3 years and I just started noticing that the main hangs down about 4 inches at the back. Is this normal or are my 29 year old sails done for and I need new sails? Also where can I find out the sail dimensions for my 1985 M15 is there a web page somewhere ?? Thanks Klaas

Klaas, the likely cause for your clew is lower than the tack is the luff bolt rope has shrunk. original sails to a Jerry built boat ... any M15 built by Jerry ... are in need of replacement. another sailmaker is Harry at Elliott/Pattison Sailmakers - www.ep*sails*.com Harry is the OEM loft for the current Mboats. be sure to measure your boat before ordering sails ... there are variations. some of these could be caused by prior owner's. i've built new standing rigs for four M15s. two different measurements for four different boats. all boats built by Jerry. a sail cleaning/conditioning service will not fix a blown out sail. such a service is good for cleaning a in good condition sail, say one less than 10 or so years old. no amount of conditioning can 'save' a 20+ year old sail. order a new main with a loose foot. with improved outhaul hardware attached to the boom much MUCH more sail control. besides a loose foot i recommend the main have two reef points. the working jib, about 128%, is a good working headsail. with a double reefed tucked in and the working jib (128%) the boat is good to a bit over 20 kts. new sails are like 'turbo charging' your boat. she will sail faster, closer to the wind, and heel less. -- :: Dave Scobie :: former M15 owner - www.freewebs.com/m15-named-scred :: M17 #375 SWEET PEA - www.m17-375.webs.com
