I'm debating whether there'd be a problem towing my Montgomery 15 about 75 miles down uneventful highway, with a Nissan Rogue to a marine slip I've reserved. The Rogue's tow capacity is about 1102 lbs. I figure my M15 weighs about 775 to 800 lbs incl mast and rigging. Gear (in car) will be about 100 lbs, and the trailer weighs 360 lbs. So total boat + trailer weight would be 1160 lb., surpassing tow capacity by 58 lbs. I'm 145 lbs and gear in car will be no more than 100 lbs. I used to drive a truck with 4000 lbs capacity so never had to worry about this. So now I'm wondering if a 75 mile drive @ 50 to 100 lbs over tow capacity is just a really dumb idea, or something that I shouldn't worry about, since it's basically no more than a one time trip every 6 months. Brad, What are the specifications of your Rogue? V-6 or 4? 4WD drive or 2? What about hills, up and down, on the road? I tow my M-15 with a Ford Ranger V-6 on 99% of my trips, and on the few occasions I have towed it with my Subaru Forester, it felt like I was overtaxing the 4 cylinders and capacities of the car. I tow my M15 all over the west coast with a much smaller and less powerful car- a 90hp VW Golf diesel. It's factory tow capacity is 1600kg or 3527 lbs. It barely feels the M15, and easily keeps up with traffic even up steep mountain grades... Any car that is designed to handle 5 large people plus a trunk full of stuff can haul an M15. That said it sounds like the Rogue has a low towing capacity because of the CVT transmission, it's possible that the transmission design won't handle the extra stress of towing without failure. I would think no worries at all towing an M15 with that vehicle. Assuming the transmission can deal with it that is - I can't speak to that. You have plenty of HP and torque and all that. Be more concerned about braking than about HP and torque. If your trans can handle it you don't need big HP to get moving, it just accelerates slower. But you do need enough brakes to match what you're towing! I tow my M17 with my 2001 Subaru Outback Wagon, tow rating 2000 lbs (in USA - in other countries the same car is rated 700 and more lbs higher). I have a bit less HP, same size engine as the Rogue (and way more miles on it I bet). I have a 5-spd manual so no issues with slushbox trans. Only place I have issues is steep boat ramps - I should have put in a high end towing clutch, as I smoke the standard clutch a little if the ramp is steep.
