Hi I know all I'll be showing is how little I know about these boats, But how close can you sail a 1985 15 , I'm finding that I'm having a hard time at about mid fifty degrees . Is this just a first year sailor's lack of experience . Or I'm I doing something wrong . I know there is probably a thread on this list about it but I can't find it Thanks in advance you all are a great resource KLaas
In smooth water, if you have good sails and the boat is tuned well, you should be able to beat 50 degrees. Obviously good sails are critical, and so is mast rake. Plenty of info out there on mast rake. jerry ----- Original Message ----- From: "Klaas" <santaklaas@telus.net> To: "Montgomery boats groups" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, August 09, 2012 9:36 AM Subject: M_Boats: How close to the wind Hi I know all I'll be showing is how little I know about these boats, But how close can you sail a 1985 15 , I'm finding that I'm having a hard time at about mid fifty degrees . One thing that I learned from experience when it comes to being close hauled is if the jib sheet lead block is too far aft the boat will not point to windward well at all. The reason for this is the head of the sail is too loose and spills wind. Moving the block forward corrects this and the boat will point better. Not sure it this is whats going on, but I once had a short pendant on the bottom of a jib that I removed for some reason. This lowered the jib on the forestay about 6 inches. I neglected to move the jib sheet block forward and found in a regatta that I could not point well at all. Didn't realize what was going on until it was too late. Since then I have noticed other inexperienced sailors that make this same mistake. and to add to Jeff's comments.. If you have a furling jib, don't forget to move your lead blocks forward when you reef.
