Midwest Montys meet in the Apostles?
Would any Montgomery owners in the Midwest -- or anywhere, for that matter -- be interested in getting together at the Apostle Islands for a cruise in September? It's a beautiful time of year there with generally steadier, more consistent winds. Hey Gordon, That does sound like fun, we are interested. How long are you thinking and do you have a route/destination in mind? --Chad M-17 #259 "Pugsley" Henderson, MN On Jul 22, 2008, at 11:39 AM, Gordon Gilbert wrote:

Hi, Chad: I'm open as to dates, length of cruise and itinerary. Considering the driving distance, I suppose three or four days might be the minimum to consider, though longer would be fine with me. Maybe we could have a break-off point where folks needing to get back could do that, and the rest could sail further. Please let us know the type of route and destinations you like. Chad, are or were you a member of the Inland Sea Kayakers in the Twin Cities? If so, we've kayaked together in the the Apostles (Sand Island) and other places as well. Good to hear from you! I would love to join a meet in the Apostles, if it is short enough to be able to fit it with my work committments... How long would people have in mind? For me the most would be a week-end, leaving Madison on Friday afternoon, sailing most of the day Saturday and Sunday, and driving back on Sunday. Andrei.
To Midwest Monty skippers interested in an Apostle Islands cruise in September. Many people who responded asked about itinerary and schedule. Just to get things started, I thought I'd propose a rough itinerary, which most certainly is open to suggestions and revisions -- and of course is subject to wind and weather conditions: Saturday: (9/6, 9/13, 9/20 or 9/27): Depart Bayfield after breakfast for Presque Isle Bay at Stockton Island, about 15 miles away as the crow flies. Depending on wind and weather conditions, we could anchor in the bay, dock inside the National Park Service breakwater there (space permitting), or slip around Presque Isle Point and anchor in beautiful Julian Bay. If everyone wants, we could even reserve one of the campsites on Presque Isle Bay to have a fire, dinner, smores, drinks, etc. Sunday: Skippers who must head for home Sunday could sail at their leisure back to Bayfield. Those of us with more time could sail to Rocky Island, another 15 straight-line miles or so away, or, depending on wind and weather, steer for a spot at the north end of Oak Island or the sandy spit at Raspberry Island. At Raspberry there's a trail to the island's lighthouse, and at the Oak location there's a trail that climbs several hundred feet to a fantastic overlook. Many anchorages in the Apostles offer one- or two-sided protection (some offer three- sided), so we'll just have to stay flexible as to where we anchor each night. Monday: Want more? We could head for Devil's Island, one of the northernmost islands of the group, which has picturesque sea caves on its north end and a very small, rarely used harbor on the south side. Or there are many other possibilities, depending on weather and what we feel like doing. Tuesday: Return to Bayfield (about direct 20 miles from Devils and less from many of the other islands). Let us know what you think, and tell us what dates would work best for you. It would be fun to explore the Apostles with other Monty owners!
