Hi gang.. The studs on my Trailrite wheels are rusted in place, as the previous owner used it in salt water. Is there a way to easily remove the whole wheel?? So far, no real problems, but knowing this, I no longer wish to trailer Stargazer more then the 2 miles to the ramp!!! Regards, Harvey/Ga M-17 Stargazer #294
Harvey, I had a similar situation with my Trail-rite. I ended up replacing both the springs and shackles, plus hubs and wheels. I got some slick hubs from Turbo Lube. These hubs take 80W gear oil and never need to be packed. (www.tiedown.com) They have a plastic dust cover so that you can see the level of the oil. Have been completely waterproof so far. While I was at it, I also changed the rusty springs and shackles. I bought galvanized wheels and tires at Boaters World. It was a bit expensive, but I feel my wheel problems are over. I tried to save the old hubs and wheels, but they were completely unsatisfactory even after a good sandblasting and bearing change. I didn't trust the very rusty springs and wheels, and the hubs tended to leak and then heat up. New running gear is cheap insurance. Harvey, This may work. Start by removing the dust cap or bearing buddies from the center of the wheel. Wipe away the grease from the end of the axel and pull the cotter pin. Next remove the nut-keeper, washer, and nut, from the end of the axel. At this point the whole wheel assembly should slid off the axel. As you do, the outter wheel bearing will drop free. There may be variations to this with different axels. A trick my brother showed me to remove the inner wheel bearing and seal is to; after removing the outer wheel bearing place the wheel assembly back onto the axel and thread the axel nut back onto the axel several turns. Then grasping the wheel assembly with both hands, give it a firm-straight pull towards you. The nut passes through the center of the wheel and contacts the back bearing: The wheel comes off and the inner bearing and seal are left on the axel. Harvey: I'd try soaking the studs with WD40 for several days, maybe with several applications of the solvent. Penetrating oil is what we used to use and may still be available, but WD40 is a good penetrant. --Gary Hyde M15 #235 'Vanilla' N24 'Sailabration' On Friday, January 23, 2004, at 09:13 PM, Harvey Wilson wrote:

Yes, remove the bearing caps, cotter keys, remove keyed washer then outer bearing race, remove drum and wheel catching inner bearing as it comes off axle. Dick Harvey Wilson wrote:
