Cris, I deal with batteries all the time. If there is a half price sale on them, make sure you check the date codes. Batteries WILL sulfate sitting in the shelf. Thus, you are paying for a battery with a shorter life expectancy. You get what you pay for. (old adage?) Since the gel cell discussion is still going, I think I will chime in. I have had three Mazda miatas with batteries in the trunk. The manufacturer used gel cell batteries because they put out no vaporized sulfuric acid in this sealed area. One of my cars is a 1991, and there is still zero corrosion on any electrodes or metal parts. The gels don't seem to last as long as regular lead acid types unless they are kept completely charged, but I think I would use one in my 17 if they were not so expensive. The battery compartment is close enough to airtight that there might be some corrosion on exposed terminals over a number of years. As for the tiny amount of gas emitted, it does not compare to driving on a freeway or walking down a city street. My '92 Miata had the battery in the trunk but it had a special vent hose connected to the battery that vented out... Just thought I'd share that with you.
