Re: M_Boats: do I need gel cell batteries in our M17?
I've had both on the various boats that I have had. My last boat before the M-17 was a Hunter 31. Both batteries, wet cell, were located in the aft main berth. I have had them charging while I was sleeping being tied up at the dock with no ill affects. He may be thinking about when you put a battery on a charger and take off the caps as in the method to charge a car battery and the sulfur fumes that come out as being caustic. On my current M-17 #652, I have a single gell cell. I had Bob put a gel cell in because I had done some reasearch and am convinced that the gell cell is more of a maintenance free battery than the wet cell. Michael M-17 #652, Pepperjack
I have one group 24 gel cell battery. It's in about it's 4th or 5th season and it's worked out well for me. Rumor has it they can be damaged if not charged correctly, so I also installed a built in, 3 stage charger. No problems to date. I've run it down pretty far, and it always comes back to hold a charge, and doesn't discharge much over the winter. Both pluses. Howard On Apr 24, 2009, at 2:10 PM, Michael wrote:

Howard, I have old #189 (1981 M-15). What brand of battery did you get? What should I pay to get the charger and battery. I am fresh water only trailer sailor type. Thanks in advance. ---Larry (Sacramento) .....and no. I will never, ever go out on Folsom Lake when I see whitecaps across the entire lake. One tries that only ONCE ! Bruised boat and ego only. No injuries. -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_boats-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:montgomery_boats-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Howard Audsley Sent: Friday, April 24, 2009 1:52 PM To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats Subject: Re: M_Boats: do I need gel cell batteries in our M17? I got the gel cell and Guest 6 amp charger at West Marine (bohica). Probably cheaper sources, but about the only option I had. We only have one boat shop around here and their markup is the same or even greater. Those big whitecaps are a good thing. You get the same aerobic benefits of a fast heart beat without all the running. On Apr 27, 2009, at 11:04 AM, Hughston, Larry wrote:

I was too busy to enjoy the uptick in the ticker....Good lesson. Nissan 3.5 was wide open into the gale. All day to prepare for 12 minutes of terror. Thanks. ---Larry -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_boats-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:montgomery_boats-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Howard Audsley Sent: Monday, April 27, 2009 9:24 AM To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats Subject: Re: M_Boats: do I need gel cell batteries in our M17?
