Re: M_Boats: Cockpit tent
J & C I have been wanting to sail the Sea of Cortez for a long time, but now with all the drug wars I'm not sure if its safe. Let us know how it goes. Eldor
I agree with Eldor about his concerns about travel in Mexico but I too would love to do some exploring in Mexico so I will also be waiting for a full report from J & C after their trip to the Sea of Cortez. Jim, I am leaving this PM for a kayak fishing trip up the Baja side of the Sea of Cortez (Cabo to the border). If I survive, I will report on how things look on that side of the pond. I have not sailed there since 1996. Tom On Apr 16, 2010, at 9:33 PM, Jim Ellsworth wrote:

Tom, Have a great trip! Sounds like a lot of fun. Life's too short I think before too long we should do some kind of trailer sailor trip down that way. Working on the traveler today may have it done this weekend. Tom, I forgot to tell you that I added another swivel cam cleat for the main halyard and it works great! Jim, Got back from traveling the full length of Baja yesterday. If you are reassured rather than intimidated by numerous military checkpoints manned by largely courteous soldiers with facemasks and bulletproof vests (they seem to be a fixture in today's Mexico), and you don't mind narrow roads, there are great adventures to be had with a trailer boat on both sides of the peninsula. You will need to find out about launching ramps from various websites and blogs, but I am sure the info is out there. As always, 2-4 boats traveling together would be the most fun and safest. If you do go down there, cross the border at Tecate; Tijuana has some roadmares whether or not you are pulling a boat. As for the swivel cleat, did you use 10-22 machine screws or rivets? Could you send a picture? Happy sailing, Tom On Apr 17, 2010, at 2:51 PM, Jim Ellsworth wrote:

I have been considering modifying my rudders to allow beaching and kick up (rather than pop off or tear off) for my M-10 and M-17. I had issues last fall with my M-17 rudder hitting bottom and popping out of the grundgeons and leaving the boat, well, rudderless. I am rebuilding my M-10 rudder so modifying it would be first on my list. Can anyone point to some information on modifying the rudders? Thanks in advance Robbin
Idasailor is the place for Very nice kick up rudders. We love ours it is much easier than the old one. Just search Idasailor Idaho and it should come up. Joel could not be nicer, Tell him Larry recommended him. BTW they have a Nor' Sea 27 in the shop that will be Sweet when they are done. The owner moved up and it is for sale. I second Larry's comments about the Idasailor. Not only is the kickup feature nice but the foil design of the rudder is a real hidden plus. Hey Robbin I am having my 1 piece M17 rudder modified to kick up by J.O.Woodworks in East Tx. He was at the Havasu Pocket Cruisers in Feb And does QUALITY WORK. The cost of freight may br a deal killer depending on where you live.
