Transom Ladder, Bob Becker and Daniel Rich.
I've been working on my M15 and I wanted to put in a transom ladder. I did a little research andthought I'd use the ladder that's for the potter 15 sold by International Marine. Boy was that a mistake.Apparently IM is out of business and they've lost all integrity. Anyway they sent me a standard 3 step fold over platform ladder while doing everything possible to mislead me into thinking it was their custom transomladder (which was nice) at custom prices. He was being evasive enough, I didn't want to buyit without a picture, but he shipped it anyway and billed me after it was already in the mail. I naively trustedhim and paid for it without a picture and now I see it was a confidence game to con me into paying for something I obviously didn't want and could have easily purchased on my own without the 300% markup....Good grief. Anyway, while I dispute the charges, I find myself back into the ladder market. I saw on thehttps://msogphotosite.com/Scripts/StoryTechnical/storytechnicaldetail.php?id... (Or you can see it by looking at "M15 Mount and Ladder Installation" at the msogphotosite) A nice ladder writeup by a "Robert Becker". Apparently he may have sold his boat to Daniel Rich. in his writeup, he gives a part number for a "westline" ladder R-1185.....anyway, I don't know ofa westline, but was it "windline"? Does Mr Rich or Mr Becker know what type of ladder he has/had and where to get it and coulddouble check the make and model for me? Having a lot of fun with the M15. I put in a nice lithium lifepo4 100ah battery up front (only 30 lbs)and depthfinder. Yet to do are the ah meter, solar panel and lights. Incidentally saw a nice light setup here from Marinebeam. Basically it's an LED that can eitherbe a white anchor light, or a 3 color masthead light. So you only need 1 fixture instead of 2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4R92WLV88cQ

$177 something. The price was annoying, but the real problem is it wasn't even a transom mountladder and I was asking for their 4 step transom mount ladder that they advertised, but instead he sent mea generic platform mount (the kind that is meant to be installed with horizontal gudgeons on top of a platform and swing the ladder from laying on top, to swinging down and stopped at a slight angle from vertical) ...and a couple of splintery small chunks of plywood about 2"x4" x 3/8". I don't know if theywere meant to be backing plates or something to put the ladder off the stern so your hand wouldn't get pinchedbut as it has no stops, it's just swinging there.. It's a 3 step ladder also, where I definitely asked for a 4 step. I kept asking for pictures and dimensions....and he kept being weirdly evasive and or ignoring me for 2 weeks. I kept asking for a phone call, but instead he sent a few cryptic and changing emails, avoiding any sort of real informationor communication. Finally after 2 weeks he sent me a tracking number and a bill....i.e. he shipped it, before he answered my simplequestions)...I naively and in good faith paid. And it wasn't even close to the ladder on his website. Annoying and what a time waste.. Lawrence We've installed 200 of these. Just order off the website. https://windline.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=59_69&product_id=5... There are other options but this is what we use.....we usually install it before decking The boat but you can install an access plate to install backup plates and hardware. You do know that International Marine is out of business? Molds and tooling sold to China. Factory in Inglewood closed with new tenants. No more employees. No Space. The windline you showed is a darn nice 3 step ladder and definitely on my short list. Unfortunately, I've had knee surgery and have difficulty crouching so a shorter ladder is not optimal for me, I'd prefer a 4 step model. Apparently windline makes a bunch of ladders that they don't advertise for OEM, so I'm going to call them Monday and see if they make this r-1185 model. Another alternative is Gaerlick sells a 4 step model similar to the windline. http://garelick.com/EEz-In=Telescoping-Transom-Ladder# Thank you for the help. ________________________________ From: Bob Eeg <montgomeryboats@hotmail.com> To: Lawrence Winiarski <lawrence_winiarski@yahoo.com>; For and about Montgomery Sailboats <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Saturday, August 27, 2016 8:50 PM Subject: Re: M_Boats: Transom Ladder, Bob Becker and Daniel Rich. Beware of boarding ladders with only two attachment points. They are prone to pulling out of the transom. Get a three or four attachment point model. I do have the boat “Kestrel” that I bought from Bob Becker. To be honest, I have not used the boarding ladder once!! Coming over the transom with the rear pulpit would be somewhat gymnastic, so I have entered the boat on occasion over the side without a ladder after jumping out to swim etc. I have never needed to enter the boat from the water in an emergency situation yet, but I think a transom ladder would not be great for that. I have to go out and look at the boat to see the model. Bob did a good job with the installation, and even though there are only 2 fixation points, he has them very securely mounted with large backer boards. I suspect they will hold. I am currently building a SCAMP sailboat, and plan to use the method outlined by Howard Rice to enter the boat over the side using an elevator approach with some fixed line. Getting over the rail of a boat with lots of freeboard is a challenge when in the water. Daniel From: Dave Scobie
Yes. The ideal IMHO would be a telescoping 4 step transom ladder that folds up in less than 15" that has a large attachment area to spread out the torque and attaches high up above the waterline. Seems the my ideal is elusive though. One I like is this http://www.buyboatladders.com/3-step-transom-stern-mounted-boat-ladder.html This is a pretty good design IMHO, but I wish it had a longer telescope, wider and the base a little shorter. Looks sturdy though.. I'm a little concerned about holes near/below the waterline. I didn't want to drill below the gudgeon for the pintle for the rudder...Maybe I'm just being paranoid. ________________________________ From: Dave Scobie <scoobscobie@gmail.com> To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com>; Lawrence Winiarski <lawrence_winiarski@yahoo.com> Sent: Sunday, August 28, 2016 1:48 PM Subject: Re: M_Boats: Transom Ladder, Bob Becker and Daniel Rich.
