Re: M_Boats: Folding Sails
There is probably a better way but here is how I fold sails while onboard. I usually pull the clew between the starboard shrouds and the mast and start to fold it (it's more of a layering process). I hold the clew in my left hand and pull the leech of the sail tight then reach up the leech with the left hand and layer it on top of the sail in my right hand. . The key is to hold the leech tight and reach higher up the leach for the next fold. I start the process while standing in the footwell but soon have to move around the shoulds. That is usually when I start to fold the layers until I get to the area where I left off the layering and keep tugging layering and folding until I get the whole sail tight against the forestay. I pull the sail bag around the whole bundle with just the luft and hanks sticking out. I then release the tack and unhank the sail right into the bad. I try to always situate the sail bag, so the identifier (150 genoa, jib or storm sail) is facing up. That way when I put the sail back on, the tack and hanks are right at the top and come out easily. This is one of those things which are much easier to do then it sounds. A short video would show how easy it is. There is probably a better system, but at least this one allows me to always have the sail in the same position and ready to be hanked on easily. John Edwards
