Yo, The mast on my 2004 M17 has two official-looking machine screw heads across from the dreaded slot a couple of feet up the mast, but they don't fasten anything to the outside. Anyone know if they are holding something important inside, such as a clip to hold the electrical cables? I can't figure how anything could be fastened that far up the tube, but there they are. I have a similar mystery set on the boom a few inches from the gooseneck, and another set on the mast. The temptation is to take them all out and see what falls off, but that could have unintended consequences of the negative sort. Thanks a bunch, Tom Jenkins Scintilla
Tom..My guess is: 1. The former owner had an eyestrap or cleat that he removed. 2. On the boom, maybe he had a block or eyestrap and removed it. 3. I do install a thru bolted strain relief cable strap down low just above the mast bolt; this internal loop has a knot in the wire bundle upstream as it climbs the mast. This prevents someone from pulling the wires loose on the foredeck and steaming lite. Take care Bob

I have an eye stap just to the right of the cutout that is used to secure the main halyard shackle. Perhaps a PO removed it. Joe, Sal suggested trying to look at the screws from the inside, but it was a bit too congested, and I don't have a fiber optics probe. Since Bob indicated that there is no factory stuff at that location, I cautiously removed the screws and nothing happened. From the spacing, I conclude that--as you suggest--the PO indeed intended to mount the eye strap at that point, then decided to move it to the other side. Fortuitously, I might be able to use the screws to hold the slot cover I am working on. Thanks to Joe, Bob and Sal for your suggestions. Tom, Glad nothing fell out. Where do you hook up your main halyard when it's not attached to the head of your main?? Also, do you have an eye strap on the other side of the mast for your jib halyard?? Both of the eye straps for my main and jib halyards are on the mast right about where the cut out is located. One is on one side and theother is on the other side. Joe, The jib eye strap is on the forward side, and the main eye strap is on the starboard side, both near the cutout. Sounds as if the PO might have moved the jib eye strap to the front so he could fasten a plate to close the cutout. Incidentally, if you use the jib halyard as a fixed line to raise the mast (as I do) or as a safety fastening point while raising by hand, make sure the transition point between the rope and wire is kept away from the masthead (i.e., raise the terminal shackle a few inches). Last time I raised the mast, the transition splice jammed into the sheave, and I had to drop the mast and remove the sheave to clear it. Tom Jenkins On Sep 29, 2009, at 11:15 AM, Joe Murphy wrote:
