I have just purchase a 1981 Monty15. The trailer didn't have and extenson I was wondering if there is any way to put one on a trailer that didn't have one to start with.
There are a number of after market methods. But here is a post on the MSOG site: "Trailer Extension April, 2002 I launched my Bolger MICRO and the ComPac16 using an old anchor rode as a trailer tongue extension: 10 feet; 15 feet; whatever was needed. The problems are: Lack of directional guidance when launching. My Admirable would push and pull the trailer tongue to get things lined up properly. It takes longer: You back down. Put blocks under the trailer wheels. Undo the hitch. Pull forward. Get rope out of car trunk. Tie rope to trailer tongue and to car hitch. Take up slack. Remove blocks in back of trailer wheels. Start launching. Retrieving had the same set of problems, only in reverse. It works; the rope trailer tongue extension is highly variable; but you soon discover that about 8 feet is all you need to keep the back of the car out of the water. So, I had a trailer tongue extension built by my welding shop for the M15. It consists of a 2" x 2" tube x 8' long. The front end has a normal receiver welded to it. On the bottom side of the trailer, under the tongue, the welder added one "U" strap. The aft end of the trailer tongue extension slides into this "U", and is then locked in place by a trailer ball that is welded to the top side of the extension. Now you just hook up the end of the extension to the ball hitch on the car, and you are ready to maneuver your boat down the ramp under perfect control. It's a worthwhile addition to your trailer. Makes launching and retrieving much simpler, and keeps the car dry! When not in use, the extension sits on the trailer frame. The front end is held in place with a "U" bolt and the aft end with a bungee cord. It rides nicely that way. " Daniel On Jul 2, 2011, at 7:49 PM, WILLIAM FRANKLIN BROCK wrote:

Congrats. ! Sure, you can buy from any trailer manufacture a longer tube that rides alongside the frame. Might bolt on or probably better to weld it on. As far as the same as todays trailer..?..No....the trailers we sell have the extension and ball coupling that slides in the Frame. Built in. Bob

i have the same problem with our trailer. we now use a hitch extender that gives us another 18 inches. it isn't long but it's enough. also we still have full control over the trailer in case (this is the only thing that i don't like about rope method). here is the link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007M1FNM well worth the money and has made things much easier. I had a 4 ft one made at my local welding shop for about the same price. It was sized to fit in crosswise in the back of my Toyota 4 runner. It works great on my M15 original trailrite trailer. william: my M17's trailer has a 'xtend-a-hitch'. very nice and well built. it is a bolt-on design that goes under the existing trailer tongue. link to the company - http://www.xtend-a-hitchnorthwest.com/ my M15's trailer didn't have an extension, but i believe it had a longer tongue than most. i only needed an extension once and used the 'rope to truck to trailer' method with no problems. :: Dave Scobie :: M17 #375 - SWEET PEA - www.m17-375.webs.com :: former M15 owner - www.freewebs.com/m15-named-scred :: Sailing Sage 17 #001 - AIR BORN - www.sagemarine.com --- On Sat, 7/2/11, WILLIAM FRANKLIN BROCK <wilbrc6@yadtel.net> wrote:
