Donald: Welcome to the group. You must have passed within a couple miles of me as you came back through the Chicago area pulling your "new" boat. If only I had known, I would have stood out by the side of the road to watch you go by! (I've never actually seen an M-17 up close yet.) Actually, before I bought my M-15, I considered going up to Sister Bay to take a look at the boat you apparently just bought. It seemed like it might be a good deal. I got as far as Green Bay one Saturday and ran into some car trouble and had to abandon the trip. So but for the grace of God I might have been the owner of Coquette instead of you! So, you don't seem to mention it in your note, but where did you take your boat back TO? And where are you planning to sail her? Is it anywhere near Chicago by any chance? I'm in the first town along Lake Michigan as you head north from Chicago: Evanston. Less than two miles from the lake shore. Maybe we can get a Midwest Rendezvous going on the Big Lake one of these days. -- Steve McClellan 1981 M15 #152 stevemc35@attbi.com
Good morning all,
For the time being, I am probably the newest Montgomery 17 owner. I travelled up to Sister Bay, WI to pick up hull #66 on Wednesday. The trip back was quite an adventure, as we had heavy weather in northern IN & I made it all the way back ... until at 12:30 a.m. I sat, spinning my tires, in the snow and ice in the driveway. We hauled it out of the snow yesterday. I'm hoping she sails better in the water than she does in the snow!
This is my first boat. I've sailed on small local lakes, Lake Michigan and the Gulf of Mexico, near St. Pete. There are a few repairs to be done on her. The gelcoat has a couple dings which should probably be fixed. The 2-cycle motor wouldn't start at the marina, but I'm going to clean it up and see if it can't be fixed. The trailer could be sanded/sandblasted and weather protected/galvanized. And the electrical system needs to be replaced. Looks like I'll be busy. I downloaded the entire email archives and will be searching them for helpful hints.
I plan on heading for the FL Gulf Coast as soon as I can fix some of these things. As of March 1, I have 6 months off work, and this boat is my keep-busy project. I'd love to hear from Montgomery owners in FL.
