Hi George I sail a M17 and single hand it quite easily with no special rigging to the cockpit. The 17 is small enough that you can handle the sheets from a position in the hatchway. Standing there, the mast is right in frony of you. I have turning blocks and cam cleats mounted on the cabin top but never run the lines thru them as it seems unnecessary. Just reach up and grab the main halyard, pull the sail up and cleat it off. Ditto for the jib. It all can be handled from a standing position in front of the hatchway, if the load on the sails is troublesome just head up a little into the wind to ease it.
