I used a 5HP Honda on an M-15, and would have preferred the 2HP if the version with a clutch had been available at the time. On the other hand, it was manageable and the main issue was lifting it on and off the mount during launch/recovery. [BTW: Umiaq's new owner wanted a smaller motor, so I still have it -- must get around to e-Baying it] The 2HP is a very different motor. Smaller, lighter and simpler. It's also noisier and vibrates more. I have one as a dinghy motor, and don't like it nearly as much as the 5HP -- but am not sure that I'd expect to actually _like_ a dinghy motor. I would not use it on an M-17 because it just doesn't seem powerful enough. These opinions are based on first hand knowledge of the M-15 (not the 17) and are worth almost as much as they cost! Giles
I usually don't chime in here. But I'd like to re-inforce other comments that 'where' and worst case must be considered. I remember trying to come 'back' through the Golden Gate one afternoon on a strong ebb tide (we went out 'like the wind'). The motor mostly kept us 'in place' (took us all afternoon to get back) so I usually go with the bigger motors, just so I'll have 'reserves' for those challenging times. I might note that my 1972 Tartan 26, 5,300# displ has a 5 hp auxiliary. Later boats were supplied with a 7 hp. I think the 5 hp has about as much power as could possibly be needed on the 17 and the vast majority of the time a 2 hp would be sufficient. Busca's former owner had both a 5 and an 8 on her and observed that the 8 was enough to make her float funny.
