Hey Doug, That sounds like something I'd like to do, for the same reasons. Basically the center cleat can't handle an anchor rode and two tie offs at raft-ups. Do you have a picture of your installation? What brand cleat did you use? Thanks, Rick M15 #337 Bluebird

Hi wannabe,
I anchor out about 30 nights a year and went many years without them with no noticeable affects, even in some 50 kts storms.
I have recently added 2, 4" cleats where the bow chocks would normally go.? These were mostly to facilitate raft ups with a main anchor out and a boat on each side.? The older standard cleat cannot accommodate a lot of line.? The newer center cleats on the Bob Eeg boats have a much higher line capacity.
If I am anchored alone I use one of the newly added side cleats and there is nothing there to chaff against.
Thanks
Doug
Rick, (pictures only sent to Rick) I think I used 4" marlow cleats with the center hole. I cut back the toe rail and filled in the exposed bolt holes with whitend epoxy. I still need to get some UV protection on them but... As usual only one of the two holes for each cleat lined up with the existing holes from the removed toe rail. I should have cut the toe rail back a little farther as it is a bit too close to the cleat. The last picture is of the mooring bit I am about to replace the center cleat with. It has enough room for a 1 inch hawser. It is being installed as the back brace/fixture for my 3 foot stainless bow sprite as I convert to a gaff rigged cutter. I just might get there this year. Bow cleats came on my "new to me" Monty 17. I am not really happy with how the previous owner installed them but they certainly work nice. I just think they look a bit out of place.
