what adjustment do you have to do to a compass that goes further south than the equator. Different that using a compass in the northern half of the world only?
Did you get my Monty pics, Mike? ----- Original Message ----- From: "MC Carpenter" <southisland2@earthlink.net> To: "For and about Montgomery Sailboats" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Friday, December 05, 2003 11:27 PM Subject: what compass correction? what adjustment do you have to do to a compass that goes further south than the equator. Yes, I sure did and thank you, its amazing how a color can change the look and apparent size of the boat, that black hull looks really impressive with the white line but that would mean I would have to paint the whole boat, I wonder how a black hull would be in the tropics. If I remember all the old cargo boats had black hulls????? I am trying to figure out how to make the center board stay down and stay up, not be loose in the slot, hanging on a pendant, so far I have an old trailer screw jack set up but it takes away my cockpit space a bit too much, any suggestions Mike
Mike My old 17 had a worm gear and crank to position the c/b keel. It was a swing keel like a lot of other trailer boats. May have been the only one ol' Jerry ever built. Lenny
Does anyone know whether Lenny's old boat is still sailing? ----- Original Message ----- From: "L Smith" <lsmith56@cox.net> To: "MC Carpenter" <southisland2@earthlink.net>; <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Sunday, December 07, 2003 10:50 AM Subject: pics and screw jacks Mike My old 17 had a worm gear and crank to position the c/b keel. The magnet on a Southern Hemisphere compass is inclined down from horizontal at it's south pole as opposed to down at the north pole in a Northern Hemisphere compass. The reason is that the earth's magnetic field emanates from below the surface at the poles and therefore has a vertical component nearer either pole. Dick MC Carpenter wrote:
