I've installed a couple of stainless steel eye straps under the joint between the deck and hull to which I can hook bumpers. Although that works well if I had it to do over again (which I just might do anyway) I'd merely fasten them to the side of the toe rail where they would be easier to find and clip on to when trying to do it while singlehanded as you are approaching a dock.
