Question for Wayne RE: Mast raising
Wayne, I read with interest your system for raising your mast and have a question, while standing in the cockpit and walking the mast forward, do you at any point have to step out of the cockpit to get enough elevation to complete the job? Also, how tall are you? I find myself having to step up onto the cabin top to get enough lift. This is quite a maneuver. ===== Time for a cool change! I use one modification to Wayne's system. I run the line from the jib halyard, through the block on the stem fitting, then aft to the sheet winch, and "grind" it up. Not much lifting involved this way, and once it's up, you just cleat if off. Then move forward to pin the forestay. Coming down, you reverse it. Get two wraps on the sheet winch, and the line firm and cleated off, then go forward to pull the pin on the forestay. Then back to the cockpit where you start letting some line slip on the winch. It comes down slowly and in control, with you in the cockpit ready to receive it as it passes from vertical to horizontal. Seawitch? Say it ain't so! Howard
Hi Sandra I am 6'-0" tall, I only have to walk foward with the mast to the small ledge (7" high or so) which is the base of the hatchway and by lifting, gain enough angle on the mast that the secured jib sheet can pull the mast up the rest of the way. You can gain additional angle increase by standing on the ledge, and even further, by nimbly stepping thru the hatch onto the sink on the port side of the boat (be very careful with this step, you might want to practice a few times without the mast).
