Hello, I am considering purchasing a 1982 M17. I have looked at a Potter 19, a Catalina 22, a Precision 21, A Compac 19, and a Compac Suncat. I am married and have 2 boys 7 and 16. The last sailboat I owned was a 1969 Tartan 27 . I will be sailing on coastal New England waters. We will be spending an occasional overnight. I like to be out there when it is blowing and like to have confidence in my boat. Any thoughts, feedback, or comments appreciated. TIA Irv Kooris
Irv, My immediate thought was that it is nice to such a good list to pick from. Your probably know more about these boats than I and your decision should be based on how you expect to use it. Short background for you to evaluate my opinions. I crewed on an Oday 23 out of Padnarum(sp?) Harbor on Buzzards bay for three years and made a number of trips to the Elizabeth Is. I chartered a Tanzer 22 in the same area for a week. I owned an AMF 2100 for 4 years on Naraganset(sp?) bay (sailed it to Block Island a few times). Two years ago I sailed my M15 from Hyannis Ma to Tuckernuck Is. Three years ago stayed inside the Hyannis breakwater for 3 days with my M15 because of the 30 kt winds. I owned a CD25 for a season on the Chesapeake Bay and cruised in company with an M17 for 4 days with good winds. The M17 was faster and pointed higher the entire trip. I still own an M15 and often crew in an M17. I am biased towards the Montgomery boats and have absolute confidence in my M15. Opinion. The M17 is the easiest trailerable boat on your list but don't know how that fits in your requirements. I recently towed an M17 with a F150 truck from VA to SC with no problems whatsoever. With the deep waters around New England a keel boat would be hard to pass up and I would probably vote for the Precision 21. With two agile boys you would enjoy this boat a lot. The M17 Would be my definite choice for a non full keel boat. The cockpit is exceptionally comfortable for long day sails and it is nearly as fast as the Precision. It will handle any conditions which the Precision will and from what I have seen both boats need to start reefing in about the same conditions (I recently sailed in company with Precision 21 on a Power Squadron cruise. They obviously left the M15 in the dust but the 65 year old couple loved the boat.) The Catalina 22 is probably the most comfortable boat in the harbor on a cruise but the sailing characteristics aren't as good as the other two. We frequently pass C22s in the M17. I don't know much about the full keel version but would assume it is marginally better. I believe the compromise here is to far towards cruising. One of the M17 owners I sailed with in June sold his Compac 19 and bought a used M17. He prefers the M17 sailing characteristics and wouldn't go back. Maybe he will post his opinion directly. The Potter 19 I don't have any direct knowledge but I do not like the cosmetics of the slab sided design. None of these boats will have that rock steady feel of a Tartan 27. The M17 and Precision have the glorious feel of a fast dingy. Tod Mills has a picture of his M17 moving so fast down the Cheasapeak Bay that it has a rooster tail. His GPS was registering 10.9 kts, the winds were over the port quarter at 25+ knots with some 4 and 5 ft breaking waves. A glorious sailing day for the heavy weather lovers. Doug, thanks for the reply. Are there anythings to be concerned about on a 1982 M17? The precision seems like a nice sailor. Unfortunately, I have a narrow driveway that may be too tight for the boat. Are Montgomeries better constructed than a Precision? Irv; My M17 is 1976. I have had her about five years. Haven't made many modifications just normal upkeep. I did add a access port for the cockpit drain and redid the drain line, added an adjustable backstay, a mast raising system (for one man) and rebuilt parts of the trailer. Right now the centerboard is stuck and I need to remove and refinish it, or if Jerry gets new ones made I will go that route. I sail my boat in northern Ca including San Francisco Bay, Tomales Bay and local lakes. This boat is much more seaworthy that my 1976 Catalina 22 was. Hello Ken and other norcal sailors, Saw your reference to sailing the sf bay, tomales bay, etc. Cat and I are first year sailors and so far have only sailed at our local foothill lake but are now ready, we hope, to try some bigger water. Could you tell us where you like to launch, things to watch out for, cost, overnight parking, etc. Also, does anyone have any favorite locations in the delta? We are thinking about launching at Herman and Helen's and sailing around Venice Island...comments/advice please. We would enjoy a cruise with others who have experience in some of these more challenging waters. Thanks, Ron and Cathryn Goodspeed M17 "hula pie" #025
Ron and Cathryn, I sail my M-23 in the Delta. I have been sailing there for about 12 years and have really grown to love it. I sail out of Bethel Island which is a lake about 3 miles across. There are over 1000 miles of waterway to explore. I once went out with my Catalina 25 and spent 8 days sailing with my wife and 2 daughters. We never crossed the same place twice. We camped on the boat in the evenings and had great fishing and swimming. The best months are April through June, and September and October. In between it can be good, but it also can be very hot. The sailing is great with good (sometimes too good 30+mph) winds and flat water. On occasions the combination of tide, current, and wind is too much and in the wrong directions and you must motor, but usually it is not a problem. On the big rivers, you can have long tacks of two or three miles. Herman and Helens can be a tough spot to get out of. The slough that affronts the place is very shallow and it is very easy to get grounded. Make sure you talk to them before leaving so you can find out where it is safe to go. There are lots of fun places to visit. Make sure to get a Delta Map that is available for a few dollars at most marinas. It will show all the sloughs and mention some interesting places to visit. You should also get a local tide table and pay close attention to the tides and depths to avoid grounding. I always leave the board down even when motoring so if I ground, I can pull it up and move off. Check out this site for more info: http://www.californiadelta.org/homepage.htm The book that Hal Schell wrote, "Dawdling on the Delta" Is a fun book to learn more about the area and places to visit. I think it is available on his site (the URL above). If you have any specific questions drop me an email and I will be glad to give you my advice (for what it is worth). Maybe we will see you out there sometime. ___ 73 de AC6KW <mailto:jeff@grudin.net> Jeff Grudin, DVM Web Add: http://www.grudin.net Ocean Animal Clinic / Cat Clinic of Santa Cruz - Santa Cruz, California Montgomery 23 Hull #072 Norcal QRP * QRP-L * ARS * AR Qrp Release Date: 7/24/2002 --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Ron & Cathryn; There is a public ramp on Tomales Bay at the north end. I have left my car in the parking lot overnight with no problems, there is a charge. For San Francisco Bay I launch at the Richmond ramp but I have never left the car overnight except when I had a berth there and could leave it in the berthers lot in plan sight. You can sail in the lee of Angel Island and there is a long breakwater at Brooks Island with a nice broad reach. Watch for tankers and weird currents near Angel Island and Raccoon Strait. Be sure and get a current chart and stay clear of the shipping lanes. I like to sail both bays in the winter when things aren't quite as rough. Reef early. I don't have any info on the delta but people that go love it. (by the way I understand a good way to unstick the c'board is with a 3/16" dia. steel rod stuck through the pennant hole accompanied by a sharp tap with a hammer) Fair winds

Good Luck

Ditto Wayne's interest in pics of your mast-raising system,
en. --Craig
p.s. Interesting, the number of references to the Catalina 22'. I took
one
on under the Mackinac Bridge last year. I had two passengers and my boat was loaded with camping gear, yet I held my own. At the time, I thought it was a fluke, but now, in retrospect. I know the C22 is raced extensively . . . And yet, it can be overtaken by an M17?

hello wayne, We replaced the thruhull portion of "hula pie's" cockpit drain...checkout the archives for this past may or june for a description...it's still working perfectly. our boat is a 1974 M17 without the wet locker and a single drain that exits the hull thru the bottom , starboard side. ron and cathryn goodspeed M17 "hula pie" #025
Wayne, I should add that we have the port galley model so that going in headfirst down the starboard quarter berth give excellent access to the work area... Cat could hand me tools and epoxy thru the small locker hatch on that side. ron
Hi Wayne; Sorry didn't get back to you right away but I don't check email every day. I installed the access port center rear cockpit on the vertical edge. My boat is the old type with a single cockpit drain. Both the thru-hull and thru-cockpit pipes were ok. I was just worried about how old the radiator hose connecting the two might be. I tried several types of hose but couldn't get any to make the tight bends correctly. I ended up fabricating the bends with 1'-1/4" copper pipe which I attached to the thru-hull pipes with short pieces of vinyl hose. There was only enough room for a single stainless hose clamp at each end. Barring any electrolis problems it seems to be working fine although I would have liked to add a shut off valve or check valve since the access port makes it easily and quickly accessible. The mast raising system is a little more complicated but similar systems are described in the archives. If you can't locate them let me know and I will try to make a sketch of my system, it works well but if I have crew with me I don't bother to use it. Incidentally it turned out that it wasn't my cockpit drain that was leaking, it was the traveler mounting bolts. They had not been properly bedded.
