Don, only wimps need auto-pilots to help do anything single handed. Looks to me like you have the process well under control... t Tom Smith & Jane VanWinkle M15/345--Chukar M17/064--Unamed -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_boats-bounces+tsmith=nextit.com@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:montgomery_boats-bounces+tsmith=nextit.com@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of LUDLOWD2@aol.com Sent: Sunday, July 03, 2005 6:56 AM To: montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com Subject: Re: M_Boats: Heaving To... Bill I have the same problem on my M-15 (IE Heaving to while reefing). I can heave to but when I get up to reef and pull the boom over, the boat rapidly rounds up. To solve this I re-rigged the reef lines like Doug shows on his web site. First and second clew reef lines run to cheek blocks on the boom, then forward through fairlead type clamcleats on the bottom of the boom. I have a horn cleat on the bottom of the boom in front of this. I bring the boat into the wind, release the main sheet a little, tie the tiller down amidships, stand up and pull the topping lift line to raise the end of the boom (clam cleat hods it in place), then I step forward and release the main halyard and quickly pull the sail down and snug the reef tack to the boom with a line. The clew reef lines are just above my head. I pull the first reef line hard and take a turn around the horn cleat, then step back and release the topping lift. By this time the boat has started to dfall off. I point her into the wind again and quickly tie the reef points in the middle of the sail. With some practice, I can do this in about 30 seconds. Hope this helps. I also cant get her to hold into the wind while raising sail so I start a slight turn under power, going in a slow circle. As she comes around in the wind I rapidly raise the main and cleat off the halyard. I wait until she comes around again, raise the jib, snug the lines and release the topping lift. I sit down, turn off the motor, sheet in and am sailing. Single handing takes practice and one day I hope to have a tiller auopilot to help out. Hope this helps Don _______________________________________________ http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/montgomery_boats
