Fellow Monties; So West Marine sells 100' of grade 30 1/4" hot dip galvanized proof coil chain for around $400 but I can buy what appears to be the same stuff at Home Depot for about $200 and online for less than that all day long. What am I missing? - Jim M17 "Spirit" Sailing Puget Sound and Points North
West Marine's mark up. Beware of shipping charges. I was looking for a 200 lb mooring anchor on line. I found some online for about $250. But that was without shipping, which added another $250. The places that advertised "free" shipping all charged over $500 for the anchor. Turned out the best price was, of all places, Walmart online. Thanks Henry. I'll check out WallyWorld. There's also an industrial chain supply company in nearby Seattle (Washington Chain & Supply). I'll give them a call. - Jim M17 "Spirit" Sailing Puget Sound and points north On 2/10/2020 4:49 AM, Henry Rodriguez wrote:

Sooo... It turns out that the price difference isn't entirely due to shipping costs or "yachty" prices. I called Washington Chain and Supply. They gave me two prices for "100' 1/4" Grade 30 Hot Dipped Galvanized Proof Coil Chain" to be picked up at their Seattle store (no shipping or delivery charges): Domestic: $190.00 Imported: $110.00 I have not inspected the products and cannot comment on quality, but the WC&S representative assured me the imported has the same working strength etc. as the domestic. In conclusion: If "imported" meant Canada, Japan, Brazil, or a multitude of other friendly countries I wouldn't hesitate to buy it - but in this case it doesn't. Since this isn't the montgomery_politics listserve I'll leave it at that. Anyhoo, the good news is that you can still get good ole 'merican made chain for 1/2 to 2/3 the price of West Marine if you're lucky enough to have a local chain/rigging supplier. - Jim M17 "Spirit" Sailing Puget Sound and Points North

Jim. You don't need 100' of chain for a Mboat. Get 20' if chain and get 200' of three-strand to make your rode. For buying chain as long as the strength and metal type certificates can be confirmed get it at the best price. :: Dave Scobie :: M6'8" #650 :: SV SWALLOW - sv-swallow.com :: former owner M17 #375 SWEET PEA - m17-375.com :: former owner M15 #288 SCRED - www.freewebs.com/m15-named-scred/ On Mon, Feb 10, 2020, 1:17 AM Jim Poulakis <picfo@comcast.net> wrote:

You're absolutely right Dave. In 49 years of cruising in various sized boats I've never used all chain rode and I've never had an issue. However, I do like to experiment with stuff. It gives me another excuse to mess about in boats. When setting up a new anchor I normally run about 7x the bow freeboard in chain. That way I never have to add freeboard to water depth when paying out the nylon. New England Ropes 3 strand has much better chafe resistance than the hardware store stuff (according to me). - Jim M17 "Spirit" Sailing Puget Sound and points north.
