Help with selling modified M 15
Hello,I bought the Montgomery 15 many years ago. I have stored it in the garage and never sailed it.Recently, I decided to put the boat up for sale. I discovered that a previous owner had cut the inside of the starboard locker so he could lift it out to access storage underneath. I have since seen postings on this. Some people think it's a good idea to put the anchor in there. No one I have spoken with can understand why someone would cut the fiberglass and it's killing potential sales.Should I have the locker restored? Please respond to my email address. Thanks much,Ann Keeton Sent from Samsung Galaxy smartphone.
Ann: Do you mean the cockpit locker pan? The pan that means you can't see the inside of the hull when looking into the cockpit locker? My M15 had BOTH port and starboard cockpit locker pans removed. It was great and allowed for effective storage of the ground tackle, fenders, dock lines, etc. See link to my M15s www-site below. Someone(s) stating that 'you can't' have the pans cut out and use the lockers???!!! Really??!! Most M17s don't have locker pans on the port side. All Sage 15s/17s/SCs don't have locker pans. yes, mine is one of the very few M17s with both pans.. in fact mine is set up to sleep 4, which I think Dave said was very rare? On Mon, Mar 21, 2022 at 5:07 PM Dave Scobie <scoobscobie@gmail.com> wrote:

Ann, having the ‘tray’ cut out in the starboard locker should have little impact on the salability of your boat- many have cut the tray for easier access. There are numerous views and theories flying about regarding Montgomery sailboats- some are pure BS. Are people ( potential buyers) saying they aren’t interested in your boat because of the starboard locker? Let them move on, you will find a buyer for your boat depending upon condition and price in the current market. I have had 3 M-boats myself- all have been/are early model boats with the ‘kiss of death’ steel ballast- zero issues in a total of 29+ Years of frequent use. The rumors of impending disaster are greatly overstated. The Montgomery boats are head and shoulders superior in many respects to the other boats in their size/weight group. The M-15 was built in numbers of approximately 600+/-, so demand usually is greater than availability. Ignore the comment re. the tray, it is an excuse on the buyers part. Make sure your boat presents well, provide numerous pictures, and show all equipment and any concerns that will fairly describe the boat. Good luck. Both of the locker pans were cut out of my M-15 during manufacture. It allows easy access to a huge storage area. I can’t imagine anyone objecting to what I consider an improvement to the M-15. If any potential buyer asks about it, just show how easy it makes it to store things in these otherwise wasted areas. Bill Day M-15 366 “Gee Whiz”

We cut most pans out but we let the buyer decide. Having access to the area under the cockpit is an asset especially if you’re going to Cruise the Bote. Bob Sent from my iPad

Hi Ann, When I bought my used M15 #400, it had the pan on the starboard side. I took one look at all the inaccessible storage space below that pan and put on my thinking cap. I'm a long time boat owner and an engineer. I carefully cut around the middle of the flat surface of the pan and removed the pan. I added a rope loop at each end of the pan for easy removal; and installed supports for the pan. I put sealed foam strips on the inside of the sail locker lids so that they were water tight. I also added lock hasps so that the sail locker lids couldn't open in the case of a knock-down. Now I had the best of both worlds: The pan for small stuff - car keys; the sail locker and companionway locks; a screwdriver and pliers; spare parts; sail stops; etc. By lifting out the pan I could now easily store my Bimini top; cockpit cushions; extra PFDs; boat hook / paddle; and the bare boom during winter storage. On the port side I had 2 anchors plus chain and rodes; extra outboard fuel; cleaning materials; fenders; fender board; mooring lines. With full access to the bottom of the boat on both the port and starboard sides, your boat is far better than boats with that ridiculous pan. If the person who did the modification did a good job, you have increased the value of the M15.
