Some galvanized wire has a rope center, that's the weak stuff. Standard 1/8" x1x19 galvanized wire is rated at approx 2100lbs, same as 304. 316 is rated approx 1800lbs. Monty rigs are so small It isn't much money to do all SS though.
WM usually has the necessary crimping tool to do nicopress fittings but you'll probably have to send out to get real swaging. There's probably no need for the swaged fittings. I imagine you could get by just fine with all nicopress. I just feel more comfortable keeping with the original design, so I had WM duplicate one of the old shrouds three times. Jerry mentioned a while ago that shrouds and forestay used to be the same length and that he changed them in order to avoid confusing new owners. I liked the idea of having them all interchangeable so that's how I had them made up. I'm keeping one old shroud that seems ok as a spare. Just in case anyone is intrested in a nicopress swaging tool, you can buy one on e-bay for about $50 plus shipping. The usual retail price is over $150. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Norm Lane" <nl@sagatech.com> To: "'For and about Montgomery Sailboats'" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 06, 2006 8:16 PM Subject: RE: M_Boats: Shroud for M15 WM usually has the necessary crimping tool to do nicopress fittings but you'll probably have to send out to get real swaging. No need for such a fancy tool. They sell small ones at WM that you operate with a wrench. They work well.
