Yes, the second reef does indeed make a small triangle. Most of the boats I sail with lower their jibs when it gets sporting, thus losing their upwind ability and ultimately lowering their main too and begin motoring; having a second reef allows me to continue under sail at higher wind speed. I have double reefed with my big jib too. The boat remains balanced.
