I'm getting tired of hurricanes in Florida too and thinking of moving for retirement. Right now I'm looking at Arkansas or Kentucky. My brother is leaving California for retirement in Arkansas soon. The deals there on real estate are amazing. He recently bought a 5000 sq. ft fancy custom home on 10 acres for under $300k. The house is about 5 yrs old and sits in a very nice area. Land is still cheap there but you have to deal with tornados! I WAS considering Mississippi until the last hurricane blew through. Deep water canal front lots 10 miles inland (but lead to the ocean) were $50k before Katrina came. I USED to think 10 miles was far enough inland but it isn't.
