What is the real demand for 12 foot open sailing boats? Many are available to be built in kit form by ham fisted/ finger cutting/ wood butchers like myself. Pride of construction there. Then there is also that issue called 'freight'. How many on the list have/are/plan on building their own small (or large) boat? There is SO much variety available, so inexpensively and easily well built by amateurs today. It is a tough market and the margins (even builder/direct sales) are small. I don't think I EVER made money in 30 some years selling new 'small' boats at the retail level. 'Small' being 13 feet and shorter in this case. I once sold 11 M-10 s and got to keep the 12th for myself! WOW! Wondering what others think? GO - former marine industry worker I never lost a million, but I was Zero$ broke twice - overall made a good+ living for my family, but not based on new sales. Money was in resale, repair and storage.
I break em and fix em,break em and fix em. Smart guys never build, they just buy what they want and go sailing. There's the old joke about the two boat builders having lunch- #1 said "What would you do if someone gave you a million dollars"? #2 answered "I'd just put it my business until it was all gone". jerry ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stan Susman" <stanpfa@pacbell.net> To: "For and about Montgomery Sailboats" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, March 24, 2011 10:24 PM Subject: Re: M_Boats: How do you make a million dollars in the boatbusiness.? I've been fixin' my 37 year old M-17 ever since I bought it 14 months ago. Think I'll re-name it "break 'em and fix 'em". I've always heard that nothing works on a thirty year old boat except the owner. I built a Bolger Nymph 8 footer. Lots of fun and rows well; haven't added the sailing rig (yet). ~~~_/)~~~Gary Hyde 2005 M17 #637 sailboat 'Hydeaway 2' On Mar 24, 2011, at 7:11 PM, GILASAILR@aol.com wrote:

25+ years ago I built a Glen-L 8-Ball. It was a great tender - very stable. I always wanted to build a steel or aluminum thirtysomething to single-hand around Cape Horn. Then the plan was to head north and hang out with bikini-clad bimbos in the tropics. But then I got married...
