Hi all, last year when I went to the Apostle Islands I towed a hard-shell, sit on top kayak behind my M-17, and used it to explore around the islands (and I could've used it as a dinghy to go to shore if I wanted to). This year I may take my son with me, so I need something which seats two. I was looking at inflatable kayaks, like the Sea Eagle 330. Does anyone have experience with inflatable kayaks, how well they tow, and recommendations for which one to buy? Thanks, Andrei.
Andrei, In the San Juans (and elsewhere for 20 years) we used a Sevylor Tahiti, which accommodated two people and a dog for shore excursions. They may not be as fast as a plastic kayak, but I paddled many a mile in the Sea of Cortez, and felt very secure. They tow fine, but big gusts can lift and flip them like any inflatable, so we let some air out and stored it in our cabin while underway. I have a sea eagle kayak-like boat. It is very well make. Inflatable's come in 2 pressures, low (like your pool/light duty versions) and high (high pressure, the boat shell feels hard, about 3.2 psi, and I he more heavy duty - harder to puncture). It uses a bellows type foot pump or electric (12V) pump. For a two person the foot pump should work fine. Sea Eagle are pretty durable and meant for more prolonged use (fishing etc), so they weigh more and take more space to stow than a lighter inflatable. Check weight when comparing. Lots to read about on the net. -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_boats-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:montgomery_boats-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Andrei Caldararu Sent: Tuesday, August 03, 2010 1:55 PM To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats Subject: M_Boats: Suggestions for inflatable kayak Hi all, last year when I went to the Apostle Islands I towed a hard-shell, sit on top kayak behind my M-17, and used it to explore around the islands (and I could've used it as a dinghy to go to shore if I wanted to). I use a 2 seat Sevylor Tahiti. Easy to pump up and deflate to store while underway. Carries 2 large men easily. Tracks OK for trips from boat to shore and back. Price was right for something used as an occasional dinghy. On 8/3/10, Andrei Caldararu <andreic@math.wisc.edu> wrote:

Hi, Andrei: We use a Sevylor Colorado inflatable canoe/kayak. It inflates fast with a high-capacity pump and paddles pretty well, considering that it's an inflatable (there's a skeg on the bottom for directional stability). It's nice and stable, and the nylon cover protects against punctures. However, it's fairly heavy and bulky to stow in the boat.
