Starboard for companionway boards
Hi All, Has anyone here used 3/8" starboard for companionway boards? Or worked with it for anything else? I'm just wondering if it's stiff enough for the span of those boards. I know 1/2" would be. Really need to replace my boards this off-season...would like something totally water/rot/warp proof for the bottom board at least. Turns out the west coast transfer warehouse for King Plastics is about 20 minutes from here, in the north Medford industrial zone. Ironically they can't actually sell me full sheets, they'd have to refer me to a distributor - but they do custom cutting for McMasters-Carr and have a cut-offs ('scrap') pile, cash/check only, that changes week to week. Bet they would work fine, John. If you get pooped by a whopper of a following sea they might give but you probably would not be out in those kinds of conditions anyway. I’ve used it on my M17. It was easy to work with and worked fine. As I recall I had to route the sides a little to clear. I don’t remember on the M17 but on the teak boards on my M15 I installed a 3/4x2” brace board on the inside where the two boards meet. I cut it on a 45 angle so that the boards dropped in nicely and don’t leak. I’m about to replace the 3/8” boards with 1/2” plywood teak. One problem with the starboard is that it is heavy. John Owens at jowoodworks.com made a 3 piece set for my M 17, bead and cove on horizontal edges as they 'lock' together on the seams and dont deflect as much as the plywood boards did Heavy but very durable and no warpage or peeling veneers etc. No surface finish required is big thing in this part of the world -AZ. I have replaced majority of exterior wood dropboard guides and hatch slides with Starboard or stainless steel (handrails), motor mount board is Starboard with spade bit recess for motor clamps as it is 'slippery stuff'! You can use router to remove excess material from non structural areas to lighten the parts up as the material is heavy as noted by Ken. Durable material good for riser blocks and shims too. I'd get thicker boards and just trim the edges that fit in the slides. I used 3/4" mahogany for the hatch boards on my M23 and just used a table saw to cut the edges down to 3/8". I think you'll be happier with the thicker boards although I don't believe the 3/8" starboard would flex enough to pop out when subjected to any normally expected forces in the cockpit. I used 3/4 inch mahogany for mine (Monty 17, AS-IS) but they are heavy and Jerry advised against putting heavy things up high in his boats because of roll. They sure are pretty though. Hi John, If you have access to a router & table I would go for the 1/2 stuff as its clearly strong enough for the span and its a quick route for the sides. Also the 1/2 material would allow you to create solid 1/4 thick overlapped mating interfaces on the board seams for better waterproofing .... Just my 2 cents.. Keith *Keith R. Thanks to all for the various experiences & opinions on starboard, & other hatch board options, much appreciated as I ponder what exactly to do. At this point I am leaning towards making the bottom board from starboard if I can get a suitable 'scrap' piece here locally. Then the upper two boards from some cabinet ply. There is no place around here I can get any marine ply so it's either using some good quality cabinet ply or waiting until I take a trip somewhere with marine ply available along the way. I've considered using 3/8" ply and glassing it fully, to stiffen, reduce likelihood of warpage, and add thickness. Current boards are 1/2" ply made by some previous owner and varnished only, top and middle board bowed fore/aft respectively leaving a gap between them into the cabin. cheers, John S.
