Speaking of the Montgomery 6-8...look down under, mate!
Just stumbled over this: https://dinghies-daysailers.com/index.html#dinghies It would seem to appear that the M6-8 is in production in Australia, in the vicinity of Jervis bay, south of Sydney?!? But...the site has no other pages, and may by older than it looks, or...? Anyone shed any light? It's about the only relevant search result I can find, besides the excellent write-up on Dave Scobie's S/V Swallow site: https://sv-swallow.com/the-dinghy/ ...which corrects the attribution on the Aussie site about the design being Lyle Hess'. cheers, John -- John Schinnerer - M.A., Whole Systems Design -------------------------------------------- - Eco-Living - Whole Systems Design Services People - Place - Learning - Integration john@eco-living.net - 510.982.1334 http://eco-living.net http://sociocracyconsulting.com
That Australia site appeared about 5-8 years ago. Don't know how they got the molds or they splashed an existing boat. They use the old seating arrangement without the large center floatation chamber. Yeah Lyle had nothing to do with the 6'8". Richard Arthur and/or Larry Pardey designed the dingy. Larry definitely built the mould. :: Dave Scobie :: M6'8" #650 :: Baba 30 #233 DEJA VU :: former owner SV SWALLOW - sv-swallow.com :: former owner M17 #375 SWEET PEA - m17-375.com :: former owner M15 #288 SCRED - m15namedscred.wordpress.com On Mon, Aug 15, 2022, 5:32 PM John Schinnerer via montgomery_boats < montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> wrote:

John, During my search for an M-6.8, I discovered the mold was sold by Bob and sent to Australia. I’ve been on the hunt for at least 6 years now, so I’d have to say it’s been about 4 years now since Bob sold the molds. I did reach out to the new builder and getting a new M-6.8 would only be feasible if me and 12 of my closest friends decided to buy a fleet. Hence, my continued search. I was disappointed to learn the mold left the US, ending any possibilities of a new builder resurrecting the M-dinks. Skip Campion

Skip Actually the molds for the 6-8 and 7-11 (and a 10/12 hull and plug) went missing out of my factory side yard in July 2019 when I was in the hospital at Hoag most of the time. They disappeared and I don’t know where they went. Bob Eeg (949)307-5699 Sent from my iPad

Hmmm...fascinating. Well, if someone stole the mold from you...not an easy thing to fence, right? Strange thing to steal, really. But if someone's gonna steal a boat mold...then what? If they have it in their possession, that would likely be enough to convince someone - especially half way around the planet - that they also have the ability to grant them a license to use it. John: There are no rules protecting an old boat like a M6'8" from being made by anyone. Same goes for the M15, M23 and anything built/designed before 2010-ish. The only thing that is possible to stop someone legally is using the name 'Montgomery'. IMO the molds were likely stolen by tweekers for the metal frames. Yeah. Just for fun I’ll be sending the guy a message. Everyone has to eat so I’am not gonna do anything radical. Maybe I’ll ask him for $10 bucks on every M 6-8 he sells for pizza money for my grandkids……hahahaha. Also, Larry put a piece of plywood in the 6-8 mold and made STUMPY, a 5 foot dinghy that fit over his hatch on Seraffyn. I think I know who has the dinghy tools now. Bob Eeg Sent from my iPad

John,
During my search for an M-6.8, I discovered the mold was sold by Bob and sent to Australia.

Just stumbled over this:

It would seem to appear that the M6-8 is in production in Australia, in the vicinity of Jervis bay, south of Sydney?!? But...the site has no other pages, and may by older than it looks, or...? Anyone shed any light?
It's about the only relevant search result I can find, besides the excellent write-up on Dave Scobie's S/V Swallow site: https://sv-swallow.com/the-dinghy/
...which corrects the attribution on the Aussie site about the design being Lyle Hess'.
cheers, John
