Becky, The PO sounds like they have a good plan - From here, it looks like the shackle is the real culprit. Not the knot. May be that the shackle has been forced thru the trunk by the trailer keel roller? Looks like the knot 'came along for the ride'. Remove core from new uphaul line (double braid dyneema would be good choice ) and use shorter smaller shackle (that one in photo looks like 5/16 or 3/8 galv bow shackle - like anchor chain type).Splice to shackle - repair trunk -Remember the board weighs < 200# so search out a good properly shaped and smaller shackle for the application. (narrow 'D' type shackle) I don't think a sleeve on the trunk will do much for the 'squirt factor' - beware chafe at the uphaul pennant. (we use a paper towel tightly wrapped around uphaul - cheesy- but meets all criteria and no chafe - in the past we employed a shop rag - years ago - til 'someone' winched it onto the drum and made quite the nutfudgecluster) A piece of innertube material with a slit in center - glued to the top of trunk over the hole works too - use 3M weatherstrip adhesive. Go get this finished up so you can start sailing! ! Good luck, Have Fun, Go Sailing! GO I replaced my CB pennant/uphaul for the PO when I was 'in the boat biz' about 24 years ago -don't remember if I spliced it or knotted it - I will post the day it fails - does that fall under 'deferred maintenance" ?
