Gary, thanks for the note about your towing. I am looking into trailer brakes, of course, and do wish I had a more powerful engine. I will not be crossing any high passes, like those in Colorado, with my current vehicle. I can get back and forth to the reservoir (Chatfield, south of Denver) I sailed on last year, pretty workably. But I am hemmed in to the west by the Rockies, as I mentioned. Most of the season all I must do is two flat miles from the yard to the ramp. (I do like the 4 wheel drive at the ramp. I watch huge pickups spin their wheels with small boats.) There is probably a used V6 vehicle of some kind in my future. May the sailing season start soon. Still, though, my off-season list for my old boat is pretty long, now including bow chocks, sail battens, trailer winch cable, trailer keel roller, check valves for cockpit drains, running light replacement (though no battery yet), some other sail repair, galley pump replacement, etc., etc. I think the cosmetics will have to wait. As one sailor in the northwest puts the steps: 1) safe boat, 2) comfortable boat, 3) pretty boat. Clearly I am still working on the safe boat step. Most of which actually depends on me getting more sailing experience. On to season two's sailing. Again, thanks to all on the list. Dave, A few years ago, I installed trailer brakes on my trailer for a Slipper 17 that I was towing behind a 4 cylinder Volvo. The boat was of similar size and weight to the M17. I bought my brake kit from Eastern marine and it was easy to install and setup. I was much more comfortable towing after installing the brakes. The ones for my Slipper were drum and were still working perfectly when I sold the boat before moving to Germany. The 20 foot pilot house power cruiser I had in Germany weighed about 4,000 pounds on the trailer and I towed it behind a 4 cylinder turbo deised VW mini van. The road from my houise to Keilheim, where I had a slip, was very hilly country and I was so glad to have the 4 wheel trailer brakes; especially on the long winding switchback road down into the Donau (Danube) river valley. I am plannng to put hydraulic surge disc brakes on the trailer for my M17 and have been looking at the hydraulic disc brake kit ($389.95) from eastern marine www.easternmarine.com as well as a dropped axel to put the trailer lower to the road. The kit does require going to 14" wheels which I have already done. Another great accessory I have is a sliding extension tongue. Griselda, my M17, is one of the rare fin keel models and really has to go deep to launch it. I tow with a 2006 Pontiac Torret (Chevy Eqinox twin) with a 3.4 L V6 and 5 speed automatic transmission. The car is rated for 3500 pounds and tows Griselda or my 20 foot pontoon boat at highway speeds over any terrain at the legal speed limit.
