Handicap for Montgomery 17
Hi all, not as exciting as major rebuild stuff but I just did my first rubbed oil finish on a teak drawer. Has anyone got experience with this? I was going from a couple of books and wonder if I pulled off the desired finish. Thanks Robbin Robbin Roddewig robbin.roddewig@verizon.net M-23 Pinch Me , Marshall 22 Otter
rubbed teak oil is what i use on my boats. also used on the Sage boats. works great and much easier to maintain in my opinion (i know others will disagree). i discuss teak oil finishing here - https://sagemarineblog.wordpress.com/2014/12/21/wood-finishes/ :: Dave Scobie :: former M15 owner #288 - http://www.freewebs.com/m15-name-scred :: M17 #375 SWEET PEA - http://www.m17-375.webs.com :: Sage 17 #1 - AIR BORN - http://sagemarine.us/sage_17.html :: Sage 15 sloop #001 - ASOLARE - http://sagemarine.us/sage_15.html :: SageCat #000 - SAGECAT - http://sagemarine.us/sagecat.html :: SageCat #002 - LYNX - http://sagemarine.us/sagecat.html On Sun, Jul 16, 2017 at 4:37 PM, Robbin Roddewig < robbin.roddewig@verizon.net> wrote:

Thanks Dave! That is a great write up. The rubbed Teak I did required wet sanding with 400 grit and 600 grit. If you put on maintenance coats do they need to be wet sanded as well? I use a product on the outside trim of my boats called Tropical Teak Oil, goes on like more of a paint but lasts about a year. Prior use for the regular type of teak oil on my Sabots washed off after washing the boat two or three times. Robbin: sand only if the surface is rough. wet sand ... no. wet will raise the grain making the wood rough. sand, wipe/blow away the dust, oil. :: Dave Scobie :: former M15 owner #288 - http://www.freewebs.com/m15-name-scred :: M17 #375 SWEET PEA - http://www.m17-375.webs.com :: Sage 17 #1 - AIR BORN - http://sagemarine.us/sage_17.html :: Sage 15 sloop #001 - ASOLARE - http://sagemarine.us/sage_15.html :: SageCat #000 - SAGECAT - http://sagemarine.us/sagecat.html On Sun, Jul 16, 2017 at 5:32 PM, Robbin Roddewig < robbin.roddewig@verizon.net> wrote:

Redid my teak this way, the most work was removing the old finish, some kind of varnish or cetol-like substance that was peeling, absent, faded, etc. but still thick and tenacious in some places. The "wet sanding" refers to sanding with #400 wet or dry after applying the first few coats of oil, and before letting it sit 15 min and then wiping off the excess. Does not mean wet-sanding the wood while preparing to oil it. As Dave said, don't do that. Dry sanding to smooth, strip, etc. before starting the oiling. FWIW I used two applications of Daly's Ship'N'Shore first, then 5-6 applications of Daly's Teak Oil. Came out great. cheers, John S. On 07/17/2017 01:37 AM, Robbin Roddewig wrote:
