Hello sailers, Just last evening I had a shock as I raised my CB to go into the dock. I found most of the pendent line worn away .I was lucky to be able to grab the lower end with some pliers and pull it up and cleat it. I was hoping to try replacing the pendent by putting the bow on my trailer and doing the work on the boat ramp with the stern afloat. As I read many stories about CB work, I believe that will not work . The person I bought the boat from last year told me about a possible knot in the pendent, but that was only to keep water from coming in the cabin. I have been sailing with the pendent all the way down. From reading the list ( & Dave Scobie) , believe I have been sailing with the CB overextended. I did hear the CB clunking now and again in low wind situations, but I thought that was normal. I am hoping to do a pendent replacement this weekend, and get sailing again as I have a short season here in Wyoming. I will trailer it home, jack up the stern, and pull the trailer forward enough to clear. I believe I need 4' clearance, which I think I will get by both ramping up the trailer, and digging a ditch for the rest. I believe the next step is to drive out the stop pin. If I can not find the pin, I could also unbolt the pivot bolt, which is visible on my keel. I was thinking of using static climbing line as a replacement pendent , as it seems so durable. I will see what line is available here in the rock climbing stores. I am pretty sure I can get 5/16th line. I have read about the trick of removing the inside core to create a smaller knot . As I have 8 months of winter with the boat on the trailer, I will probably do a more complete CB refurbish then if needed. Thanks for listening and any additional advice will be appreciated. Doug: I eventually gave up trying to get the CB out, went to a fiberglass boar repair shop and paid them to do the job. You can't drop the board unless te boat is back aways on the trailer, and then the weight makes the tongue go up. There are all sorts of jacking arrangements on the web, but none looked good to me. You'll probably discover a need to sandblast and epoxy coat when the board comes out. It's not a job you want to do twice. Good luck By the way, I solved my CB pendant leak by taping rigging tape in a taper that gets pulled down into the hole when the board is all the way down. Don't know how long it will last... There are a lot of ideas on how to elevate the boat to get at the CB pendent, but the choice I made was to haul the boat to a local boat dealer, who has a lift. He charged me $90, which was cheaper than the deductible for an ER visit or a funeral. We put her in slings and lifted her straight up, then pulled the trailer out and set her keel on blocks and jack stands on the corners to keep her from falling over. Once airborne, if your pendent is still good, let it carry the load as you feather the board down. If the pendent is bad or gone, the board will drop out of the slot as you lift. Leave the pivot bolt in and pull the stopper pin. There is a small "tooth" cast into the aft end of the board that rests on the stopper pin. Drop your board down past where the pivot pin was and you will likely find a clevis pin on top (C-board is pie shaped). Drop your new pendent in from above, tie in a figure 8 or other stopper knot through the clevis, then hoist her back up. I think my pendent line is either 3/8" or 7/16" Stayset or some such thing.
