George: attached is a simplified diagram showing how the centerboard is sitting when extended. the centerboard on the M15 will not come fully out as the forward edge of the board hits the forward end of the trunk. you don't want to sail the boat with the board hitting the forward end of the trunk. always support the board by the pennant.
Can any of the centerboard work be done in shallow water thus preventing having to lift the boat?
the board must be dropped to replace the pennant as you can't get to the hole where the pennant line is attached. the board, on the M15 and post late 80s M17s, is the same and only about 45-ish pounds. this is not a lot of weight for a 5/16" line. unless the line is damaged such showing wear or rot. the inner core of double braid is doing almost all the 'work', the outer part is for UV and wear protection of the inner core. the pennant is unlikely to need replacement except every 7-10 years. :: Dave Scobie --- On Sat, 6/15/13, George Iemmolo <griemmolo2@gmail.com> wrote:

David Thanks for the diagram I now remember seeing it somewhere on the Montgomery site I think. I do not believe the CB on my boat is going all the way down as in earlier communications with the site and Jerry M. specifically mentioning that the CB lift was on the order of 15". From all the way up to maximum down all I can get is approx 6" of CB line down the hole. Again I will need to get to shallow water on the beach and send my S-I-L down to see what is going on. David Another question regarding the CB system when the CB is completely extended is the Pennant line extending down a straight vertical line from the hole or is it tilted towards the stern? If so how much? The original centerboard rope on my M-15, built in 1985 is still in place and shows no sign of fraying or other wear. Thanx for the diagram.
