Lou, I have the IdaSailer rudder and it is great. I had one on my WWP 19 and loved it. When I got my M-17 the large heavy wood rudder/tiller was a bear to handle. Also I went to the San Juan Islands June 2009 and we launch from a crane with the mast down so I was not sure what to do for a mast crutch. Well, IdaSailer has a mast crutch that attaches to the rudder so the rudder stays on the boat at all times. In addition at the same time I ordered a tiller and worked with them on hight and length so my tiller pilot ended up going into a small pin mounted on the top of the tiller instead of a big bracket on the bottom which I needed for the standard rudder/tiller arrangement. And working with the guys at IdaSalor was a plesent experience. Good Luck, Jim Ellsworth M-17 #603 Grace -----Original Message-----

Thank you so much for responding. Do you have any idea about durability for a M 17 kick up rudder from this company? I was in a way dreading making a kick up rudder but this solution appears to be well worth the expence. I want to get the 17 ready by the first weekend in May as there is a get together at Cedar Key near the bend in Florida ( just above Tampa) . Thanks Lou

Hi Louis,
Another rudder option for you is that John Owens at J.O. Woodworks can make you a beautiful new one (as he had done for me).
John will also be at Havasu, as he was last year.
His website is at
And you can get his contact information there.

YES new holes were drilled and a motor mounting plate was installed. The transom did very well and i was pleased with the outcome. I am now trying to figure out how to make a kick up rudder. The origional had MANY knicks and gouges and I have always been a kick up kind of guy. Thanks for your note . Lou Remmers

Louis: the deck/transom joint can be a problem on the early M17s (meaning those with a transom cutout for the outboard). i'm making a guess ... at some point prior to your purchase did someone put a motor mount on the transom just below the outboard cutout? jerry can make you new shrouds, fore- & back-stays- www.jerrymontgomery.org good to read of another m-boat receiving some TLC. - Dave Scobie - M17 #375 - SWEET PEA :: www.m17-375.webs.com - Sage Marine :: www.sagemarine.us

I purchased a 1977 M 17 last January and have had fun rehabing it. I fell in love with the monty back when they frist came on the market. The boat I have needed a new transom , so I cut the " cap " off and dug out the rotted plywood. made a template with cardboard then to luan and finally marine ply with excellent results. I replaced the aluminum drain in the underside of the stern and have all of the deck hardware off and am ready for the finish coat of paint when the weather cooperates. I hope to go to cedar key the first weekend in May
if I finish in time. I have had fun so far and need to work on my standing rigging next.
