Hate to get off the interesting thread about teeny motors, but I have another question; what resists UV best on a boat in the sun: standard spar varnish, or urethane spar varnish? Additionallly, I now have numerous coats of regular varnish in good shape, and I wonder if the urethane would go over the regular without sanding to bare wood (which I ain't doing). Thanks, Tom Jenkins
I'm kind of guessing, but I'd bet reg spar varnish. I think they both have UV inhibiters. Borrego might know. jerry ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tom Jenkins" <tjenk@gte.net> To: "For and about Montgomery Sailboats" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, September 27, 2012 4:24 PM Subject: M_Boats: varnish Hate to get off the interesting thread about teeny motors, but I have another question; what resists UV best on a boat in the sun: standard spar varnish, or urethane spar varnish? I've been very happy with Bristol Finish. I'm in my fourth year of North Carolina coastline sun and salt and it's holding up very well. I will be doing some recoating this winter. It's a %$@%%^ to put on but I think it's worth it. Call them up and see what they say about using it on existing varnish. I seem to recall it is feasible. But they'd tell you for sure. Check out their website and give them a call. They are really good people to chat with. They gave me some great tips for applying the stuff. Tom, You could check out the review of wood finishes that Practical Sailor did in the September 2011 issue. It changed my mind about what to use on my wood. Robbin On 9/27/2012 7:24 PM, Tom Jenkins wrote:
