Hello all, I’m planning on getting a new trailer fabricated by Pacific Trailers. It is my understanding that they made trailers for the Montgomery’s since the 1980’s, and later, also made the lower profile trailer for the Sage 17… when the Sage was re-designed, does anyone know if there any changes to the hull configuration? (I would like to order the newer, low profile trailer for my 1980 M17.) The rep at Pacific Trailers says to “his knowledge” there weren’t any changes. Has anyone changed out trailers for their Montgomery’s? Thanks so much, Keith M17 Ginger Snap Get Outlook for iOS<https://aka.ms/o0ukef>
I have a 1984 M-15 and I bought a trailer from Pacific about 10 years ago. It fit the boat’s hull perfectly. The trailer is galvanized, and has stayed in perfect shape. Bill Day M-15, 363, Gee Whiz

Keith: The Sage 17 and M17 hulls are completely different. I'm not sure what you are referring to about the S17 hull design changing? The S17 trailers are custom with fixed bunks - meaning cannot be adjusted. Using a trailer set up for a S17 will cause damage to the M17 - I've seen this first hand! A Sage 17 'low rider torsion axle' trailer made with adjustable bunks will work - but you need a way to lift the boat so you can correctly set up the bunks (not hard and I've done it many times). If you need more details let me know. :: Dave Scobie :: M6'8" #650 :: SV SWALLOW - sv-swallow.com :: former owner M17 #375 SWEET PEA - m17-375.com :: former owner M15 #288 SCRED - m15namedscred.wordpress.com <<-- new site! Does anybody have a ballpark cost on the Pacific Trailer for the M17? Mine is a huge trailer that the previous owner modified to fit my M17, it’s in decent shape but would prefer a more compact trailer… might not be worth it but something to consider. I got a quote from Pacific 3 or 4 (or maybe 5 by now) years ago for M17 trailer and it was something over $3600 as I recall. Not including transport from SoCal, another $200 or $250 (to southern Oregon). After that I talked with a local marine/trailer service and fabrication place. Seemed pretty clear I could get a custom trailer for less, and less weight. I haven't made a move yet, but I would go with a local boat trailer fabricator if I get a new trailer. I can do all the bolt-on stuff myself (bunk supports, bunks, keel guide, lights & wiring, etc.). Just need a carcass I can tow away from the fab shop. My aim is to keep it light & simple. The Pacific was quoted at somewhere upwards of 650 lbs IIRC, maybe even over 700 lbs. I would have two key customizations: 1) Extendable tongue 2) Front mast support crutch that extends to provide attachment point for mast raise/lower. FWIW the fabricator I talked to favors plain steel C-channel for boat trailer frames. He pointed out that being all open, C-channel is easy to rinse thoroughly if dipped in salt water, lighter than box for near same stiffness, and if it is rusting anywhere, it's easy to see and treat. cheers, john On 7/6/21 8:43 PM, Jason Leckie wrote:

I saw a Montgomery 16 at the Swantown marina on South Puget Sound today that was cat rigged. The boat owner told me his boat was 1 of only 2 M-16 cat boats built. Is this accurate? I thought there were more M-16 cat boats built. Steve M-15 335

Steve, You'll have to wait for Dave Scobie to chime in. I thought the only cat rigged boats Jerry built were the Sage Cats? Due to the lapstrake hulls I would think they'd look very similar. Was the sail up? If so, then the logo on the sail would tell the tale. Oh well, we'll just have to wait for Dave to give us his thoughts, since he's the resident expert on all things Montgomery/Sage. Excluding the M-dinghies Jerry only designed one catboat cruiser: the SageCat. Bob did everything relating to his 16. The first 16 hull was owned for a short period by Dan Phy and then traded back to Bob for a M15. The second 16, last I have heard, is owned by Rocky Light (I think I nhabr the name correct). I don't have the Salish 100 participant list so I don't know who is meeting up at Swantown Marina, Olympia WA. I'll know more the middle of next week as the S100 fleet is stopping at Port Ludlow WA one night, I live aboard at the marina, so will be hanging out with the fleet. :: Dave Scobie :: M6'8" #650 :: SV SWALLOW - sv-swallow.com :: former owner M17 #375 SWEET PEA - m17-375.com :: former owner M15 #288 SCRED - m15namedscred.wordpress.com <<-- new site! Yes, I designed, tooled and manufactured the Montgomery 16 KatBote. Just before I actually had a big heart ❤️ Problem and passed out on the Dock at Swantown Marina. Walking down to the Katbote and totally blacked out. Actually Dan Phy gave me tons of help and me being a stubborn workaholic and I didn’t realize how sick I was. I was too weak to go on the First Salish so I spent a couple weeks just living on the 16 KatBote and after the Salish, Dan helped me pull the boat and like a total idiot I towed it back to Southern California, stopping at Rest Stops at night, I had a 4 step ladder in the cockpit that I could pluck out , climb into the Bote and pull it up after me. Got home but seriously couldn’t catch my breath; wife drove me to an urgent care and they immediately had me transported to Hoag Hospital. I am better these days but no more building boats like I did for 40 years. I had an extra M 15 left over from “The Price is Right” TV show that Dan lusted after so I sold the 16 KatBote to a guy in the Bay Area. Dan’s a M 15 guy….lol Before my issues I built 2 complete 16 KatBotes and when I was forced to close my shop I had a blue hulled, completed hull, ballast, interior and deck in the mold. So I have that in storage at this time; I have the molds as well. I can’t believe how stubborn I was. I was very weak the previous 6 or 8 months and now I know why…. If anyone wants a few photos just message me via email. I’ll send some. Photos don’t post here. Be well Bob Eeg Sent from my iPad
