I am going to purchase some new cruising sails for my M15. Those of you who have purchased recently, can you give me some ballpark figure for what you paid and what you got? I would be happy to take the posts offline. Thanks! Daniel Rich M15 #208 "Kestrel" danielgrich@gmail.com

Just spoke to Judy B. She is terrific. I just ordered some new sails. I will get a working jib and a 55% jib too in addition to the new main. Should be terrific! Daniel Rich M15 #208 "Kestrel" danielgrich@gmail.com On Aug 21, 2013, at 7:19 AM, Becky Belding <becky@beckybelding.com> wrote:

thanks Dave, This is very useful information. I must admit, I really can't tell by looking whether or not a mainsail or jib has seen better days or not. Perhaps if I raced boat to boat often enough I could start to tell but.......is there some sign or detail or test I can run so I can make an informed decision about whether or not to replace sails? My boat dates from the late seventies and I don't know how much or how hard it has been driven and these are the original sails. Is that alone enough to warrant replacing them?? Is there one type of cloth that is better than another to make them out of? From past emails on this site a flatter cut sail would be advisable where the wind is often 15 knots or more. Any thoughts on this matter? Fairwinds, Tom B M17 #258 On Wed, Aug 21, 2013 at 11:54 AM, W David Scobie <wdscobie@yahoo.com> wrote:

Tom, Here is another option I considered in lieu of replacing sails for another season or two. I am not sure where you are located, but here is a link and communications I made here in the NW. http://cleansails.com/index.htm I made inquiry about charges for Montgomery 17 / 2 mainsail, 2 jibs, 1 genoa and the reply was: Main $74, 100% jib $65, 150% genoa $98. North Sails Oregon or Banks Sails work with us (shipping charge), however you can UPS to us direct if you'd like. Hi Becky, This is an interesting idea. I called them and had to leave a message but then I looked at their list of convenient dropoff points. They are all pretty local to Anacortes. I live in Rockport, Tx. on the southern end of the Texas Gulf of Mexico coast line. I knew I should have moved to Bellingham when I bought this boat :-}. Did they actually give you a critique on the sail condition or just clean it? I will look for sail cleaning in south Texas. Thanks for the idea. Maybe Anacortes is still in your future Tom :) No, they just gave me a quote with the information/size for the M17. It at least gave me another option as I just got my boat in July and need to keep costs down and also maximize the life in the sails. If it's a matter of shipping costs and they do a good job, I wouldn't hesitate to give them a try. Maybe just send off one of your sails and see how you like the results. TOM I to just purchased a M15 this season and had my sails refurbished by www.Sailcare.com they have developed a process that replaces the resin in the sailcloth and they come out feeling new. I used them on my previous boat a Pearson 23 and I had the sail loft convert them to full battens at that time also. They do a full inspection and repair first. Very reasonably Main was $56 and the Jib $24 I had them convert from a bolt rope to sail slugs for an additional $24. They have a catalog and supply quite a bit of small boat hardware. Jerry is great to work with. Thank you, George, I bookmarked the page for near-future reference. I am looking to change to sail slugs also. BTW, I looked into the mastgate configuration to go with the slug conversion. I was surprised to see that a thin shock cord is all that holds the mast gate in place. Does this work?? Has anybody on this site had sailing experience with one of these arrangements?? I used them on my previous boat a Pearson 23 and I had the sail loft convert them to full battens at that time also. They do a full inspection and repair first. Very reasonably Main was $56 and the Jib $24 I had them convert from a bolt rope to sail slugs for an additional $24. They have a catalog and supply quite a bit of small boat hardware. Jerry is great to work with.

Tom,
Here is another option I considered in lieu of replacing sails for another season or two. I am not sure where you are located, but here is a link and communications I made here in the NW.
http://cleansails.com/index.htm
I made inquiry about charges for Montgomery 17 / 2 mainsail, 2 jibs, 1 genoa and the reply was:
Main $74, 100% jib $65, 150% genoa $98. North Sails Oregon or Banks Sails work with us (shipping charge), however you can UPS to us direct if you'd like.
Just a thought... :)

thanks Dave, This is very useful information. Fairwinds, Tom B M17 #258

Hi Tom, I installed a mastgate on my M17 in the spring and have been sailing with it all season. It's great - no more messing with a sailstop. The shock cord is all that's needed to hold it in place since it's not under any real stress. It's also easy to install. Highly recommended. Tom, My mast has one-sided opening which the mast gate completely closes. It's the internal hinged model, and only needs two holes drilled to mount. It comes with a template that locates the holes. It's around a 30 minute operation if, like me, you measure fifteen times before you drill. Rick M17 #633 Lynne L On Thursday, August 22, 2013, Thomas Buzzi wrote:

Tom The Mastgate with the shock cord is applicable if you are removing the sail as when constantly tailoring. Used it on my larger boat and the shock cord did not last the season. As I keep mine in a slip I now use a stationary mastgate. Based on the cost I have made mine from aluminum door stop material, available with a slight lip to match the mast at ACE hardware. You will have enough material left over to accommodate all your sailing friends. I cut to size and shape the ends to match the opening in the mast. Use two sheet metal screws to attach to mast. Less expensive than SS fixed gate KISS does the job. Very reasonably Main was $56 and the Jib $24 I had them convert from a bolt rope to sail slugs for an additional $24. They have a catalog and supply quite a bit of small boat hardware. Tom,
Here is another option I considered in lieu of replacing sails for another season or two.

Daniel Rich M15 #208 "Kestrel" danielgrich@gmail.com
An ideal sail will have the maximum draft about 40% aft of the luff (differs a little with different boats), with a nice, easy curve. When you add luff tension, it moves the draft forward, and normally in more wind you need to do this to keep the max draft from going too far back. On a sail that's 'blown out" you won't be able to keep the draft where it belongs and the sail will tend to be too full back towards the leach, which really puts the brakes on. On a good sail, in a drifter or pretty light air, the sail will be shaped about right with very little tension. Sails for heavy air areas should be made of heavier material (less stretch and last longer) and flatter in general but the sailmaker needs to be careful; a mainsail on a masthead rig like an M-17 should be a bit flatter, but on a fractional rig like an M-15 or a Sage 17 the mast will bend off and will flatten the sail when doing so. If I were sailing a 15 in a place where the wind blows 20 to 30 every day I'd get a smaller jib, flatter, and with heavier material. You'd go just as fast, and reef less. Ask the sailmaker about material weight; they know WAY more than I do about things like that. jerry ----- Original Message ----- From: "Thomas Buzzi" <thomaspbuzzi@gmail.com> To: "W David Scobie" <wdscobie@yahoo.com>; "For and about Montgomery Sailboats" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 21, 2013 11:42 AM Subject: Re: M_Boats: New sails for M15
