M15 Skippers Any suggestions on running light for M15.. I believe I need red/green , white stern, white mast head ( for running under power) Cant decide which is better Individual battery or 12v system fo all the lights? Thanks Capt. Jim Sadler SV Pelican M-15
Hi: I use the portable battery operated ones but found that they aren’t that bright. While negotiating a foggy crossing from Anacortes to Lopez Island, other boaters in the group really couldn’t see my lights. I think there are portable ones with LED lights which would be better. I don’t have electricity on my M15. I use solar lighting in the cabin. If anyone knows of portable running lights with LEDs, send me a link. Brightness is often a problem on sail. The lights are really meant to operate at 14ish volts which you only get with the motor running / charging. A good 12v LED will overcome this using the built in viltage regulation.

Navisafe Duckworks 12 volt systems are pretty heavy for a 750 pound Monty 15. I have Navisafe lights. Nice compromise for a 15 and about any kind of mount you could want.

As MikeZ wrote the quick, easy and cheaper way is the Navisafe LEDs. Bright and USCG Certified. Need two things: The first is the Dinghy/Skiff kit - https://www.duckworks.com/product-p/nav-768.htm Mount the transom/vertical bracket on the inside of the transom on the far starboard side (away from the motor and clear of the tiller) and use the sticks to get the light up. Set light according to how going: 125 to stern for sailing, 360 for motoring and anchoring. For the bow get the rail mount - https://www.duckworks.com/product-p/nav-956.htm Mount the bicolor light up front. I used this setup on the Sage 15/SageCat. :: Dave Scobie :: M6'8" #650 :: SV SWALLOW - sv-swallow.com :: former owner M17 #375 SWEET PEA - m17-375.com :: former owner M15 #288 SCRED - www.freewebs.com/m15-named-scred/ On Tue, Oct 20, 2020, 6:40 AM Mike Z <speedernut2@gmail.com> wrote:

I tried portable/battery powered lights from Aqua Signal. Something went wrong with the bicolor navigation light pretty quickly, and despite being LED they seemed to eat batteries. Finally I decided to bite the bullet and install a small electrical system. It turned out to be pretty easy and I really like being able to flip a switch and getting good, bright, reliable lighting. I installed these on the front sides of the boat: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AGR4T3U/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_tit... and this on the transom: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LQTJ3TM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_tit... I put this switch in a small wooden frame to control things: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N3W14NH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_tit... I'm not sure if photos will come through, but this is how it looks (port side front light): [image: image.png] [image: image.png] Mount for the switch just inside the cabin (wires were cleaned up a bit after install). [image: image.png] With the switches installed and solar controller in the back. Sam (and others): The AquaSignal portable/AA-battery units were cheaply made though USCG certified. I don't believe A.S. still makes the portable/batt units as I've not seen them stocked for some time. There are cheaper knockoffs that look exactly like what A.S. made, West Marine sells these, but NOT having the USCG certificate. :: Dave Scobie :: M6'8" #650 :: SV SWALLOW - sv-swallow.com :: former owner M17 #375 SWEET PEA - m17-375.com :: former owner M15 #288 SCRED - www.freewebs.com/m15-named-scred/ On Tue, Oct 20, 2020, 10:46 AM Sam <s.hunter@gmail.com> wrote:

Thomas (and others following along): Navisafe are powered by AAAs.
