Although I've been an M-17 owner since July, I've only just now found this mailing list and thought I'd introduce myself. After a 20-odd year hiatus from sailing (I sailed a Rainbow on Chesapeake Bay in the 60's and raced a 505 out of West River in the early 70's), I found in semi-retirement time to get back on the water again. I was lucky enough to find M-633 for sale by Walt Wood not ten miles from my house, and bought it at first sight. I've had a great time the rest of the summer and fall sailing on the Potomac River, and can't say enough good about the boat, which was just what I was looking for. Perfect for single-handing without worrying about hiking straps or capsizes, sails beautifully, and is easy to sail from the trailer. Pushed the season until the day before Thanksgiving, but it looks as if it's all over now until spring. Can't wait. By the way, does anyone know of a vendor of covers for the M-17? I'm getting a custom quote from Sailor's Tailor, but would appreciate any other leads. John (Rick) Davies ************************************** Check out AOL's list of 2007's hottest products. Rick, Congratulations on your purchase.? I know Walt.? We've sailed together and he is the one responsible for getting me interested in the Monty.? I've sailed other small day sailors in my past life and was interested in finding another small boat for day sailing when I met Walt.? Thanks to others on this board (Doug) I have been introduced to over-nighting.? I love it!!? There is a small group of us who have gotten together this past summer a few times and spent a few days on the Chesapeake.? If you are interested, we can contact you in the spring when we begin planning our trips for the up coming season.? I hope the winter goes by quick for you. Hi Walt, Tom Smith, here on the list has a cover on his M17. Unfortunately there is no manufacturer's name as it was made before Tom found her. You can see a couple of photos of his cover on page two (you'll figure it out) of his Photo Site album: http://www.msogphotosite.com/M17Smit1.html I think the most difficult part of the job was at the forward end of the mast. They made it enclosed and before you slip on, there is a foam plug that is put into the end so as not to allow chafing. Very good design. I'm going to guess it was spendy though. You may want to click on the photos to enlarge and print them out to show the cover maker. Bill www.MSOGPhotoSite.com
Welcome to the group Rick. You might check with the "Trailer Sailor.com" website. Their chandlery includes a canvas shop. They have certain products listed for certain brands of boats. Although the Montys are not listed, you may get a decent quote from them for covers. I puchased a hatchboard bag from them for my M15 and it appears to be a well made product. Hi Rick, Welcome to you, and you've got a fine boat there. I met Walt when he was showing his boat at Annapolis (Fall '05), and Bob Eeg was there with him. I went to the show focused on a different boat, but the M17 sure caught my eye. I was living in Connecticut at the time, and arranged to drive back down to Annapolis to meet Walt again a few weeks after the show. We had a great sail on his Monty that day in windy conditions, and that really made it clear to me that the design of the M17 was superb. I was really impressed by how stiff the boat felt in the chop and gusty conditions. Walt's boat wasn't for sale at the time, so I ended up getting one direct from Bob.
