Folks, I know some of you sail out of Mission Bay in San Diego, so maybe you could answer a couple of my questions. One, is there concern with clearance for Montgomery 17's under the three bridges? I got a clearance of 38' (presumably at mean sea level) off the web for the first two, which should be more than ample (more than London Bridge, eh Sean), but you can't believe everything you read. Another question has to do with use of the Bay; is there enough space to sail with all the other watercraft whizzing around, particularly in the fall to spring period? Dunno, but it seems as if a week sailing out of one of the marinas would be a load of fun. Thanks, Tom Jenkins M17 Scintilla
hey tom, i sail an M15 in san diego, including mission bay. i haven't had any troubles with clearance. granted you need more than i do but i think there should be ample clearance. sail bay is great, it's a nice long reach and it's a speed controlled zone, so no craziness. there is a part of the bay where all the water skiers go, and that isn't super conducive to sailing. there is also san diego bay if you want to explore more. hope that helps. Daniel

Tom, Like Daniel, I too sail an M 15 (Spirit) out of Mission Bay, and the bridge clearances are ample for them. Moreover, I've seen larger sailboats sailing Mission Bay and tied up at Mission Bay Yacht Club in Sail Bay (a section of Mission Bay), including an M17, so I doubt you'd have a problem. Also, as Daniel said, Sail Bay is a nice long run - in a more or less north / south direction and wind usually from the northwest. The motorboats use a different section of the bay. Years ago, I used to sail mission bay and San Diego bay in my Balboa 20 and had plenty of overhead clearance under the bridges. I believe the Balboa mast was about 2 feet taller than a standard rig M17.
