M-15 mainsail attachment and posting woes.
Hi all. I read often... new to posting hope it works THIS time... thanks to Bill and Keith for the assist (if it works). I've had some woes trying to figure out how to post again... maybe turning off Hotmail's "Rich Text Format" will do the trick. my ?...: Have any of you modified your M-15 (or similar) mainsail attachment system? I love my 1993 M-15 "Poco Rojo" (which I bought from Rachel - who some of you know - several years ago) but most days when I drop the main, I am frustrated by the way the mainsail detatches from the mast groove and piles up into the cockpit... I have installed a simple "Boomkicker", which helps keep the boom from whacking me in the head when I drop the main, but I'd like to keep the main luff attached to the mast and be able to flake and tie the main on the boom more easily as on other larger boats I've owned and sailed. So... I am wondering if any of you have modified your system... such as plastic slides lashed to your main, or bat cars or something along those lines. I always singlehand, and always say to myself... "That's IT!!! I'm going to change this setup".... So with Poco Rojo in the garage for the winter, 4 degrees in N. Idaho and the snow piling up.... seems like the proper time to either refit or head to Baja... Any experiences greatly appreciated. David Hunt (Poco Rojo), Coeur d'Alene, Idaho / Loreto B.C.S., Mexico It is all just stuff and some numbers. A day spent sailing isn't deducted from one's life. Hi David, Your post came through just fine, and it's great to see you and "Poco" on the list! It's a great group, and, as you can see, old (or should I say "former"...) Montyers never leave; we just lurk ;-) Hope to hear more from you and that cute little red M-15, --- Rachel Fatty Knees 7' #302 Former owner, M-17 #334 Former owner, M-15 #517 On Dec 26, 2005, at 9:09 PM, David Hunt wrote:

David, My main has a rope luff, so it needs to be pulled down. But with slugs you can buy a track stop, a slug with a knurled screw to tighten it in the mast track. Be careful, especially when trailering, as it can loosen and fall out. Or, just use a line or bungee around the mast at the bottom of the track to keep the slugs in the track. I switched to plastic slides, the bolt rope attachment is just too inconvenient. The slides allow you to lower the sail without taking it off. You can buy them at West Marine or any similar supplier and install them yourself or have a sailmaker do it. David: An alternative to the slugs is to do the following when you lower the main. Hook or tie the head to the front of the boom (a reefing hook is a great addition), then pull the doubled front edge (luff) of the sail back in the cockpit and begin rolling it up from the fold. Finish rolling and secure it to the boom with ball bungees. The sail will raise easier than before, because it will be less wrinkled, and it will be nice and compact on the boom. I got the idea from Larry Yake--he uses that technique on his M17. Gary Hyde Pullman, WA gmhyde1@mac.com M17 #637 'Hydeaway 2' M15 #235 'Vanilla' On Dec 26, 2005, at 7:09 PM, David Hunt wrote:
