Wrinkle Boat Mates I am looking to mount a boarding ladder as soon as the weather cooperates, presently 40 deg. in NWI 50 mi. E of Chicago. Would like some feed back as to which type and any ideas on mounting same. Looking at where I would have to get to indicates either mounting a hatch on the starboard side of the cockpit stern to get to the mounting screws or borrowing my great grand daughter (6 yr.) to clime into the starboard locker and hold the nuts. Hi George, Four is always better, top two bolts, one on each leg should be bolted through a plate. I used a ss tang I had lying around to spread the load. Just drilled holes in it. Or nice big flat washers can be used. The bolts at the upper end of the ladder bracket take the load thru sheer. The lower bolts have to deal with being levered out of the transom so use the ss as high in the bolt scheme as you can. Here is the web address of the MSOG site. Just bookmark it once you find it. http://msogphotosite.com/Scripts/General/index.php Fair winds, Tom B. <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campaign=sig-email&utm_content=webmail&utm_term=icon> Virus-free. www.avast.com <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campaign=sig-email&utm_content=webmail&utm_term=link> <#DAB4FAD8-2DD7-40BB-A1B8-4E2AA1F9FDF2> On Tue, Apr 3, 2018 at 10:42 AM, George Iemmolo <griemmolo2@gmail.com> wrote:

Sorry George, I can't remember the brand. We sold that boat. I never had a problem with a two point mounting. However, I installed a large backing plate on the inside and the bolts good and tight. Thus creating a friction hold. The brackets were probably 4 inches long where they mounted to the transom. Thus, though they had only a two point mounting, they were substantial. And, the ladder had a hold off that rested against the transom. But there is another issue, none of us weigh over 155 pounds that used that ladder. I used 3M 5200 along with the bolts. That stuff is pretty permanent and strong. It was very solid. The boat was a West White Potter. If I had had the four attachment ladder, I would've been dragging it in the water. Hi George, Don't know how old your transom is but be sure the core is solid before thru bolting. Of course you can always use ss backing plates under the nuts to distribute the load. It is a lonely feeling when you cannot climb back into your own boat. Had to actually swim ashore once-upon-a-time and bum a ride back to mine. Very embarrassing at the very least. Getting back in should be the first priority consideration. David Grah Thanks for the pdf. unfortunately I can not get it to print for me. I have given some thought to the over the gunwales mounting ladder. As I sail with a mate 50% of the time the ladder could remain stowed unless needed. I would deploy it when single handling. George "We Can Not Control the Wind But We Can Adjust Our Sails"
Hi George, I've put several on different boats and can say my favorite is the telescoping. As to mounting, the location of the outboard and backstay can dictate location. I'd sure encourage anyone to hold the ladder up with a bungee that is easily stretched or removed in case of falling in the water. Here in Maine, we've had lobstermen drown right next to their boat. We also had two summer visitors swamp their dingy next to their boat and drown trying to get back to their boat after a night on the town. Either those steps or a boarding ladder ought to be priority for all of us with a boat big enough that we can't pull ourselves up into--especially if we are cold. I am looking to mount a boarding ladder as soon as the weather cooperates, presently 40 deg. in NWI 50 mi.
I have spoken to my grandson and he is o.k. with that😎

Hi George, Check out the pics on the photosite of my "AS-IS" Monty 17. There was an ob cutout in the transom back then (circa 1977) so I used that to ease climbing back aboard and mounted my ladder accordingly. It is a stainless, telescoping ladder that swings up out of the water when not in use. It came with a velcro zip tab which makes the ladder super easy to deploy. I also installed a couple of "hold off" blocks, black in the pictures of the transom, in alignment with the vertical members of the ladder. They are HDPE plastic and impart an outward slant to the ladder making it much easier to actually climb the ladder since it is no longer vertical. Some of the fasteners come through the transom above the rear seat, some below. The access panel I cut into the back bulkhead, once again made bolting the lower ladder brackets to the transom easy. That access panel made it much easier to install the set of scuppers there also. The cockpit sole scupper clogs easily, something to be avoided. Good luck, Tom B <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campaign=sig-email&utm_content=webmail&utm_term=icon> Virus-free. www.avast.com <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campaign=sig-email&utm_content=webmail&utm_term=link> <#DAB4FAD8-2DD7-40BB-A1B8-4E2AA1F9FDF2> On Tue, Apr 3, 2018 at 9:44 AM, George Iemmolo <griemmolo2@gmail.com> wrote:
