Kick up rudder for M17
I've seen some information about a fellow who fabricated a kick up rudder from an existing, older rudder (the undershot model), aluminum plates, etc. If that fellow is on the list, I'd like to get some details on how this mod was accomplished. I've actually got three pictures of the end product (can't remember where I got them) but no copy to go with. I already use the Ida-Sailor (now RudderCraft), but I've got an older M17 rudder I can fool around with. Thanks. t
Kick up rudders are convenient if you like to sail in shallow water over rocks, but when they kick up, they tend to get in the way of the propeller, and if you you are motoring, which often happens in shallow water over rocks, the kicked up rudder becomes a chewed up rudder. But not to worry, I learned from experience that a chewed up rudder can be patched with a fiberglas patch kit available in most boat stores. what I haven't figured out yet is; why isn't there any intermediary position of the rudder from which you can actually steer the boat, once it's been "kicked up"??? I have gone aground in the shallow sandy ends of a the lake and always in a situation where believe me, I need to remain in control, and there's that rudder in "kicked up" position, totally out of the water, rendering the darn thing useless, and I am in peril.. What am I missing? Is there a superior rudder set up with intermediary positions? Or must it be all or nothing? This is a variation on the vertical sliding rudder theme that is used on the M17: http://www.storerboatplans.com/wp/design/the-standard-storer-boat-plans-kick... The entire rudder slides inside the rudder box. Can be all the way up or down or any variation in between. On Feb 6, 2013, at 7:21 PM, martha wrote:

cool! I knew there had to be options, and, I couldn't possibly be "running into" the situation singularly, with a boat that prides itself on being able to sail in shallow waters... -----Original Message----- From: Howard Audsley <haudsley@tranquility.net> To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wed, Feb 6, 2013 7:33 pm Subject: Re: M_Boats: Kick up rudder for M17 or a 15???? Having sailed an M15 for several years, I'm aware of how the original kickup rudder works. As it recall, it's either up or down--not much in between. I don't know if Bob changed the design in later years, so my comment relates to only the Jerry-built boats. On the other hand, the Idarudder is infinately tunable using a line and cleat (on my version, which is an early model). It looks like they build a rudder (ruddercraft) for the M15 which can be tuned. t
thanks, that's what I thought/perceived; and perhaps one of the reasons why so many M 15'ers gravitated to the Ida-rudder? -----Original Message----- From: Tom Smith <openboatt@gmail.com> To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wed, Feb 6, 2013 8:07 pm Subject: Re: M_Boats: Kick up rudder for M17 or a 15???? Thanks Eldor, I'll look into this. I must say that this Montgomery site represents a great body of knowledge and experience to tap into. It is a good selling point if the sad day comes when one has to sell his boat. Tom B On Thu, Feb 7, 2013 at 11:00 PM, eisenee@aol.com <eisenee@aol.com> wrote:
