Well, we are almost from SoCal here in Lake Havasu. Actually about 3 miles east of SoCal! :-) I don't know of any organized Monty specific events, but a number of us hook up occasionally with the Socal Potters group to argue over who has the best boats. (ok, ok we don't actually argue! just get together and have a great time.) We are taking Dauntless over to join them in their Anacapa Island sail out of Channel Islands Harbor in two weeks. I believe that Norm Bundeck is also going to try to make it with his M15. We had a great time last year. Fu Shing Pan also brings his Mboat and joins the group very regularly. Every month the group sails out of another Socal venue. Here's a link to our webpage from last years trip. The group split in half with some of us sailing up to Ventura for lunch and sightseeing and the rest of the group heading out to the islands. _http://pic1.piczo.com/havasumontgomerys/?g=26486404&cr=1_ (http://pic1.piczo.com/havasumontgomerys/?g=26486404&cr=1) and the link to the Socal Potters Page is _http://www.howies.net/socalpotter/_ (http://www.howies.net/socalpotter/) They are a really fun group. Hey folks, If you use latitude as a guide, you certainly are in SOCAL! The SOCAL Potters does sound like a great group to join on trips. I have seen their website and that Fu Shing Pan had joined them on trips. However, I wasn't sure whether he had a special dispensation, or whether they regularly welcomed non-Potters to join them. Can Monty owners actually join their association, or just join them for a specific trip? Thanks also for the link to your website. The trip photos were great. Your M 23 is beautiful. It looks like she could cross oceans without breaking a sweat! She also looks very comfortable and nautical below. Regards, Ron C. --- Nebwest2@aol.com wrote:

Help! I bought a brand new Nissan 4HP 4-stroke motor last year and it was very nice. Quiet. Started on the second pull every time. It has probably no more than 10 hours on it at this time as i use it mostly for ramp purposes. Up until last weekend it has been running perfectly. Last weekend, though, i could not start it at the ramp. Not a sputter... not a single sign of life. We had to test our sailing skills and get out of the harbor under sail. Good practice but not something i wanted to do again. The next day i went to play with it to see if i could figure out what the problem was (right! I know outboards like Kobe Bryant knows humility). When i went to start it up on the trailer it cranked up on the second pull just like normal. I had no water hooked up to it so i let it go only a couple seconds and shrugged off our experience to some sort of anomoly. Based on that succcess we went out again yesterday (Lake Pardee for those of you in norCal... fishing lake, no waterskiers allowed... lake level 98% of capacity and very clean). I went to start it up and it started as expected, but.... When i pushed the choke back in upon warm-up it proceeded to die... i pulled the choke back out to ensure that she would keep running ... perhaps she needed to warm up a bit more... pushed the choke back in and she died and would not start again. Showed no sign of life... My novice thought is... fuel filter? Water in the line? I don't know how that could happen but i suppose it could. I will attempt to replace that myself if that is a probable cause but i thought i would throw it at this group first as you folks are dialed on all aspects of the Monty Life!!! Thanks for your help, Jeff M17 #336
Hi Jeff, Sorry to hear about the outboard problems, first thing I would try is to open your gas cap and see if air rushes in or if it improves your motor's performance. A plugged or partially plugged gas cap vent could cause the symptoms you are describing. Next, check the fuel filter as you described. Try a new spark plug, or at least look at the condition of your spark plug, that could give you some indication as to what the problem might be. Lastly try fresh gas with a carb cleaner like sea foam in it, sometimes that will be just enough to take care of the problem. Good luck, I am sure you will get it worked out. --Chad On Aug 13, 2007, at 8:08 AM, Jeff Royce wrote:

If it has been 'sitting' for a long time...the 'pilot' jet in the carb can easily get 'gummed up'.When this happens, it runs lean...hense it's running only with the choke on. That is why its recomended to run your OB out of fuel after use...especially if it won't be run for a while. simple 'carb cleaner' usually doesn't work if it is plugged by the 'varnish type' build up of gas just sitting there. These jets are quite small and effect low speed use. May be something else...but this IS a frequent problem.>>

Wow!!! Thanks for the prompt and detailed responses. I will try and clean the jets first... now, here's a question... how does one go about cleaning the jets? Perhaps i can find something in Google... Also, i have one of those outboards with a small internal tank so i can't run it dry after every use. Will using Stabil take care of the problem for engines such as mine? Thanks again, Jeff M17 #336
Jeff, Before I got too carried away taking apart carburetors, I'd get down to the parts store and get some "Sea Foam" and dose the gas tank up good. Good stuff. It'll probably clean out your problem without taking anything apart. Just had a Honda gen-set doing the same thing and running Sea Foam in it for an hour cleared it right up. You can always take stuff apart later if this doesn't work. I like to keep a little Sea Foam in anything that doesn't get run on a real regular basis. Rik Jeff Royce wrote:

Thanks Rik... that fits my mechanical ability to a tee. This is pretty funny to me since just earlier this week I experienced this for the first time. I have a plastic gas tank and was trying to get back to the dock before the sun set, and the engine started puttering out and getting hot. We decided to stop the motor and try throwing the sails back up, but the wind had died. The motor cooled off and I pulled on the cord and started heading back again, just to witness the same heat and missing. I looked at the tank and thought, "what the hay, it can't hurt..." so I opened up the vent and wha-lah, ran smooth again. I figured I had never had that problem before because it usually is running while in the sun, and the sun was starting to go down and it was cooling off, instead and creating a vacuum. Lesson learned - also, don't forget to close it back up before you pull the boat out of the water if it's a portable plastic tank... It could flop over and spill gasoline (didn't happen to me, but it could have if I hadn't remembered to close the vent).
